Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

was planning to work at STX until I actually die...but now this VEEP gives me a pause

I have been at STX for a long, long time. I love my job. I love the people...most of them. I like the money. I am okay with the medical. I stopped worrying about promotions a long time ago. When boss wanted me to move, I moved. When boss wanted me to work late, I worked late. When boss wanted me to take a pay cut, I adjusted. I did not try to make noise. I have been married several times. I raised all of my kids...got them through school or out of jail...watched them start their own families. I got many friends who already left their high paying jobs. They are bored doing other stuff that did not pay as good as old job. I was planning to work at STX until I actually die. What was the point in leaving anyway? If I went somewhere else, I would be a rookie again...with less vacation and perks than I get now. Most high playing places would not hire me anyway since I am "older". Besides, if I left, STX would give me nothing...No pension...nothing! I never been offered a VEEP before until now. I think I got everything I need...but not sure this VEEP is really for me even though I qualify. Why should I accept? Why can't I die at STX?

Has there ever been VEEP offers with different criteria? I only know of two groups that have VEEP offers and one group is more closely tied to revenue generation and the other is not. The one more closely tied to revenue generation is the one with the more restrictive VEEP criteria. Were the previous cuts too deep so that a more liberal VEEP in the one group a risk to drive delivery and thereby revenue? Regardless, history shows that an involuntary RIF is typically on the calendar, immediately following a VEEP. Based on the VEEP criteria, there is definitely one group with a potential bullseye.

What Seagate sites are offering VEEP? I think if it was a generous package offered then most people would take it.Of course if Seagate dont get the volunteers for VEEP then the inevitable layoffs will soon follow.Youve got to ask yourself how high are you on the potential layoff list and is it worth the gamble in not taking the VEEP option and hope that youre not on layoff list.An employee could be damned if they do or damned if they dont.

I have taken the veep in 2009. It does not last long at all - your expenses will remain the same or go slightly higher - so do not expect that the veep is going to last much. Stay where you are until they drag you out. If you are old no one would want to hire you. Ask Saccardi and Montemorra about their job search now that they are out. STAY PUT.

In most companies that I have seen, a VEEP is a sign that a big layoff is imminent. This means one can either take the VEEP and go quietly or get laid off with a much less attractive severAnce package.

Hard drive companies have frequently had massive hiring and layoff binges over the last 30 years. Those adjustments were simply responses to rising and falling demand. With hard drives fading away, the layoffs would be expected to continue. It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

Absolutely. No second thoughts about it. If you are offered the VEEP take it without blinking an eyelid.

Take the VEEP. I was offered the VEEP twice during my stay at Seagate and did not take it. Later I was laid off. I wish I had taken the VEEP as it was much more attractive than the lay off package.

Previous veep was 8 months kicker plus normal severance. This one is just to slightly clean house before the next round of cuts. Polite way of nudging you out of the building before walking you out. Take the voluntary before the mandatory.
