Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

Week of 7/15

Getting back on topic for this forum

Is this the week of layoffs? If patterns fit, it will be. So far I haven't heard specifics. If anybody knows something, let us know.

As for the side topics that are being discussed on here..

We all know the company is in trouble. We all know everybody is in a bad way. We all know that most of us don't feel any confidence in our leaders. We all know that there are people who are in positions, not by their qualifications or experience in the job but by who they know and who they blow (this occurs everywhere, not just WS).

The rumor that is flying around the Greenville office says that layoffs will be announced Thursday. I've heard the rumor from several people in different divisions of the company.

Additionally, a suspicious amount of monthly/quarterly meetings have been cancelled on Thursday. When I asked my director about our canceled meeting, he didn't answer and went on a 30 minute monologue about how he would never begrudge an employee for searching for another job and that we shouldn't hold ourselves back if there were positions available that would help us grow more.

Take that how you will. I don't know that it will be Thursday, but something is happening.

Well I know its not easy to just up and move but if its what has to be done to keep stability in keeping your family financially sound its what has to be done. Unless like the other guy said you want to work at Walmart and downgrade your lifestyle.

Oh by the way, how did the original posters (work for HR maybe?) plan to get us back on the topic of just talking about layoffs after they happen work out for you?

Yeah the move city thing did come across a bit dramatic- it’s not like the kgb are coming after you, you are just going to have to work at Walmart instead of telecom. Maybe downgrade car, house, phone, clothes, after school activities for kids, drain retirement, oh or hey you could find another job now before WS sh-ts in you like they do to everyone else

Plan on moving cities? Yeah, because that's so simple. Most people have families, kids in schools with friends and ties to an area. Yes, update your resume and be active in looking, but most people can't just up and leave an area.

Well said gzo. Get ahead of the dam curve. Early bird gets the worm. You dont want to be competing with a ton of other people for the same job listing after a mass layoff. Most of you should be preparing to move cities if there are no other opportunities in your area. Have your plan in place and get those apps out there.

My manager is pretty connected and VP level people have shared info about a month out before layoffs because he was trusted and he would hint to us because we worked on sensitive RIF projects for the company in the past. Things are conspicuously silent and upper management more tight lipped than usual- follow your own intuition on what that means to you...this is no longer just about our expected rolling quarterly layoffs and those promised to stockholders from recent acquisitions, major changes that only upper management will benefit from are coming. And yes if one person reads this and finds better work before they and their family suffers through a layoff, then this site and those that speak their minds are doing a great service.

If both heads of household in your family work at WS one of you should get out now.

If your 401K match was WS stock and you haven’t dumped it even after its lost 75% of its value this past year (you should track that if you don’t already) then dump it before

You lose even more of your retirement.

The rest of you, for God’s sake update your resume, when there are 50 of you in your city laid off and suddenly looking for the same open jobs at the same time your odds are much worse if you get out now- you will most likely make more money somewhere else too

30% cut coming across the board end of July

@UbZB0nz-agz damn straight.

This site would just be a glorified hit list of folks who lost their jobs. X laid off in wherever. So many in blah outsourced to what have you... Just a depressing race to the bottom without even a chance to b!tch about it....

The people who absolutely know what's going on, and when the exact next cuts are coming are not talking to anyone. Not even a chance of leaking. Your supervisor, manager, staff manager, and director doesn't know $hit. It's from the VP and higher when the order drops to cut X ammount of $ from your payroll budget today, and they pick who gets cut.

If by my comments on this site have helped at least 1 person say.. hey maybe I should find a new job and so they and their families are spared from the hardships of a layoff. Then I have accomplished my goal. For those of us sticking it out, for whatever reason, we know the risks we have accepted the risks...

*Say whatever you want but if you read this board regularly you can't say you wasn't warned.. *

Doesnt matter to talk about layoffs. Most people aren’t proactive and will just sit around until they get canned like they didn't see it coming.

Why would anyone care about layoffs at all if there weren’t concerned about the health and direction of the company and how and when it impacts their job and whether or not it is time to look for work elsewhere. Again, that is the point of this site and the info is solid on what is coming and how employees should set their expectations about their future - they certainly are not going to get an honest answer from upper management or stream. So your “move

Along, nothing to see here, all companies do what we are doing” is total bullish-t

Well it’s the same crap over and over. Bash TT. Get out while you can. Stock price s---s. Polish your resume. Employees left s---. Going to bankruptcy. I’m happy I left and am making double. Then why are you posting here? Blah blah. Not good info on layoffs.

Yes, every company is just like WA. So let’s not talk about what is really going on and just say that there will be a layoff between now and the end of time there.

That is one of the stupidest things I’ve seen posted so far.

WS is beyond screwed and the whole point of this site is to talk about that and how that relates to layoffs, which teams, how many people and when.

I can't say anything is fitting any patterns of the past. We were supposed to announce Q2 earnings on August 2nd and that was moved up to the 9th. 2 weeks ago we made an announcement about refinancing all of our debt. That was supposed to close on July 20th that was moved out to July 26th. The terms of the refinancing also changed. There are lots of things going on behind closed doors these days. My guess would be a round of layoffs between now and August 9th.

A truck driver is heading west across the Arizona desert. He has been driving all night, and as the sun starts to rise, he feels the need to stop and commune with nature. He pulls to the side of the road, parks, and walks out into the sage brush.

As he is standing there, looking around at the beauty of the early morning, he notices a lever sticking out of the ground. After a few moments, he walks over, walks all the way around, and then reaches out to grasp the lever. Just as he does, he hears a voice say, "Don't touch that lever."

The driver jumps about two feet off the ground, and as he comes down, he looks around. No one is to be seen. Thinking it was just his imagination, he again reaches for the lever. Again the voice yells, "I said don't touch that lever!" Being more prepared, the driver senses the location of the voice and looks down under a sage brush. There he sees a small snake.

The driver, in much astonishment, said, "Was that you that just spoke?"

The snake said, "Yes. I have to keep people from touching that lever. If the lever is moved, it will be the end of the world."

The driver, still rather astonished, said, "What is your name? And will you talk on TV?" The snake said his name was Nate and that he wasn't interested in going on TV; anyway, he had to stay and watch the lever to see that it wasn't moved. The driver said, "Look, I will get the networks to send out camera crews. That way, you can inform the entire world about the danger of the lever."

Nate thought that over and allowed as how there was a great deal of sense to the idea. The driver, true to his word, got the network camera crews out. They put on broadcasts in which Nate warned the entire world of the dangers of moving the lever.

A few weeks later, another truck driver was going through the area. He was following an oil tanker, and the tanker sprang a leak. When the driver's truck hit the slick, it went out of control, and he found himself headed straight for the lever. He remembered seeing Nate on the TV telling about the lever and so he knew that if he hit it, he would cause the world to end. He strove, with all his might to maneuver the truck. Finally, at the last moment, he was able to swerve, but he ran over Nate, the snake, and killed him flat!

The truck driver was heard to say "Well, better Nate than lever."
