Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Promotions

Most employees are very unhappy here. No raises or promotions for anyone ever is pretty demoralizing. I've been at the company 5+years and I don't know a single employee who has been promoted during that time. Seagate has become a very poor company to work for. And the benefits get worse every year.

I know this is a small comfort, but it's better not to be promoted then to be promoted and then laid off less than a year later. I didn't know this was happening, but after it happened to a friend of mine I found out he was far from the only one. So, while no promotions is lousy, there is worse than that.

Looks fine from where I'm standing.

My acceptable wage is more than adequate. I've considered quitting and working for Starbucks just to have access to better coffee, but I don't think they pay $37.00 an hour to make iced latte's, so I guess I'll stay with Seagate.

They do not follow company policy for promotions. Most employees have been working outside their job classifications for years. I see a few lawsuits in their future. I have been asked to give statements in two and just gave a written account for guy that was getting shafted on Friday. So three I’m aware of.

I worked at Seagate 28 years and it had it's ups and downs as any industry does when it has such a rapid turnover of products due to their short production times. Overall, I think the quality of people I worked with was exceptional, the morale was high, and the pay was great for the area I was in. Unfortunately, as in all businesses, all it takes is one technological breakthrough to make or break a company... and unfortunately this last one was by another company. I saw it online as it was announced, and knew the end was near. Sure enough, the layoffs started a year later, and a year after that I was cut, I think at the 3rd major layoff. All in all, I loved working for the company and was sad to see my time there end. I still keep up with those with and now outside of the company, and now that's I'm once more employed, try to help them as much as I can. It's sad watching it self destruct as it's currently doing...

Sadly speaking .. STX will go to hell without its high dividend to attract stock investors

Also, we have a big depth need to pay. Look at their messy financial report

Maybe, that's the reason that management won't tell us in the all hand meeting ... The reason that the promotion queue getting longer and bonus pool getting smaller ...

Mr. SEguJ2j-4mui ...

159 -- Sr. Manager ??? So you proved yourself that only Mangers got promoted ...

As per current views from employees (Most of) are different from you.

As you said "I saw others equally critical people get promoted and some lously ones let go "

Go and dare to talk with your team members with above line and see response.

@SEguJ2j-5hvk..I noticed how you wrote "acceptable wage" ...not good wage, fair wage or even decent wage.Maybe you like working for Seagate because you are one of the very tiny percentage of employees who get treated well.

Eployees have every right to criticize a company who only pay them an "acceptable wage" and expect more than an acceptable days work.

indecisive management steering seagate to alot of twist and turn and new onboard CTO will have to hack so many employees to steer to his directions

Funny the flow of sacking, then re-hiring and back to square

Management to set a clear objective and set the goals, not always shifting the goal post every 6 months and sacking and hiring again

This is absurd ! managers from seagate are not highly look up upon in different sectors as well

Good Luck steering the sinkboat, look into the management team instead, this has been emphasis again and again

4mui, I suspect most of the complainers on this board would be equally negative no matter where they worked. They blame everyone else, other than themselves, for their shortcomings.

It's almost ironic that the very company that extended the goodwill of providing fair work at an acceptable wage with opportunity for promotion and personal growth, is somehow made out to be the bad guy.

Congrats on the 159.

I too have seen regular promotions, raises, and bonuses. Working for Seagate has been nothing but enjoyable, challenging, and profitable. Best decision I ever made was to come here after working in electronics at 2 other companies.

On another note, why is it that so many people think that a website that is dedicated to providing a forum for people to post news and rumours of layoffs is somehow "theirs" to use for degrading the company, and anyone that says they actually like their job must work for HR or is a manager?

I will sit back now and wait for the deluge of derogatory comments that are almost certainly going to come my way in just a matter of minutes.

LOL.

The entitlement seen in this forum is mind blowing. You are paid what you are worth to the company. If you did not receive any promotion, raises, RSUs, options, or paltry bonus is because you did not create any value to the company. And the company can part with you as you are not critical to the functioning of it. And you can always leave your sorry a-- so that we deserving ones get more of our share.

I was promoted this cycle. In fact I went to 159 grade, and this was second promotion in three years. I saw others equally critical people get promoted and some lously ones let go in last three months.

They are creating deep engineering organisation structure to mess up things specially @ pune cloud systems. It is just preparation for closing down this in-efficient business unit.

All things are inherited from one of the money making contractor who's objective was to increasing his revenue.

Yes, Managers got promoted and engineers are asked to scarify their raises in hard time. What a Joke. Some of the teams form pune working as services organisation since all local management is from service culture at that business unit.

We were told that we were luck to have a job in these trying time and forget about promotions and focal increase. I mean the unemployment is at the lowest in 8 years and everywhere else wages are increasing. Meanwhile dividend was fat as usual. I mean we have debt obligations that are massive and cannot support this outrageous dividend. I guess it is the by product of having executives paid primarily with equity. Has anyone looked at SEC filing requarding equity payment? It is just ridiculous.

I agree. We went thru multiple layoff cycles about every 6 months for years--Layoff, rinse, repeat-- format which in itself is emotionally draining. But after a while you become shell-shocked, I suppose. Still, as a long time survivor there has always been expectation that with so many layed off (aka 'reduced footprinted'), so many services, niceties, etc. reduced or eliminated, that we'd see more in our yearly compensation. Not so. It is disheartening to say the least. It just adds to the general sinking-ship feeling. We are over managed & under staffed. My manager barely comprehends what I do, and that I'm doing the work of 5 people with all the downsizing. We have tried to hire but so far, no takers. I think Seagate has created the reputation of Layoff Leader and it will not bode well for them in the long term of the company .... my 2 cents.
