Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Small focal increase for 4s and 5s plus up to 8000 layoffs in Jan 18

Hearing from various managers in Londonderry that there's potentially 8000 layoffs coming in Jan 18 plus somewhat ironically a small focal increase for 4s and 5s . The mind boggles .

Springtown will be closed ahead of Normandale, Normandale qualifies new products then they are second site qualified at Springtown, also for over 12 months 40% product being scrapped at Springtown which pushes up the cost of each head to unsustainable levels, also Seagate are releasing a 64tb ssd, Samsung 128 & 256tb ssd's which makes HAMR obsolete before it has even got anywhere near production(HAMR was supposed to be exclusively produced at STST but now Normandale also working on it). Yes there is a shortage of chips but this is being addressed by Intel and Samsung investing Billions expanding their factories and with WD and SK Hynix competing to buy Toshiba's chip business the future does not look good for Seagate/Springtown. I await the results (sales) for the first quarter.

Its a must the Seagate management becomes more honest and transparent with its employees regarding the outlook of the company as a whole. The time for sugarcoating has to stop.I think the more uncertainty there is the more morale drops and it already is at a low.Uncertainty causes negative thinking and negative behaviour,so management needs to step up to the plate and tell the truth..no sugarcoating!!

@ @P8Z1lUx-1jnj....Thanks for replying again. Totally agree with you on the state of HR and management at Springtown. The true reflection on how busy we are comes from the weekly shipments not how many wafers are being processed. Not all make it to the end of the line for various reasons. Also as the production numbers decrease the amount of R&D is increased, so in the FABs you will not necessarily notice a drop in physical work. On a brighter note i personally think we are in a better position than Normandale as there may be a time when only one site is needed and as far as production is concerned we manufacture more than they do and our operating costs are lower. As for the Temps coming back in October we'll wait and see on that one as you must agree Seagates future predictions have not exactly been the best over the last couple of years....

Capitol has been and still is being drained off to enrich a few and has NOT been going into upgrading the business. That is 100% truth.

New laws mean if you employ a temporary operator for more than 12 months then they have to give them full time position. They bring in and release temporary operators every year. They bring them back as they are a fully trained souce.Orders go up and orders go down thats the nature of the business.New machines ,new products means more work.I will say that Seagate Springtown is badly run the HR department isnt fit for the job.Certain job titles are especially made up for some people.Seagate Springtown is one huge clique.Bullying and threats are common from some managers, and if complaints are made against management to HR then the wagons are circled. No trustin in HR and no trust in management.finally.. I dont know what fab you work in or what toolsets you work but from where i work i can tell you work is not decreasing infact there is talk of temp operators being recruited again in october.

@ @P8Z1lUx-1eku.....First thank you for replying. Let's have a closer look at those jobs. This week they released 58 temp operators as the work schedule was decreasing. The recent full time operator jobs did not increase the operator numbers but barely managed to replace those that had left due to natural wastage. The Tech jobs that are advertised will go to operators who will not be replaced leaving actual operator numbers lower than this time last year. As for the engineer posts it would be wrong to comment on those as I honestly don't know whether they are an addition to the current numbers or replacing those that have left to go to pastures new. The new tools are needed as the some of the ones we have are two generations behind and are not capable of producing the results needed for future products such as HAMR. The ones we have are constantly failing as they so old. Hence the new Tech jobs to try and keep them in production. One of the problems Seagate as a whole is guilty of is not keeping up to date with it's capital equiptment. It's a case of money to the share holders and we'll make do with the older generation tools. This attitude has now come back to bite them on the rear as they now need these tools to move onto the next generation of HDD. Finally take a read of this link and then come back and tell me all is well in Springtown...Enjoy your week end..

How is it possible for 4's and 5's to get focal increase when they are doing away with that type of appraisal.

I got laid off in July 2017. The only employees that I know that were affected were in their late 50's and 60's. Surpisingly, they just posted a job with my exact title on their website. Only problem is the job description was cleverly worded to exclude the people that had this position and got laid off. Targeted new grads for a job that was traditionally for more experienced people. Also heard they gave the interns a day off for the lay-off day so they would not see what their future held for them. Clever people.

Focal increase is false. I have a 4 or 5 and got 0%. It doesn't pay to work hard at Seagate.
