Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The company isn't what it used to be.

The days of job security are gone if you're in retail.

Work on those resumes and start applying while you have a job.

Applying for other jobs while still employed is much less stressful than waiting til the final hour.

AT&T employees have great reputations in other industries, so use it to your advantage.

@2bud, that is a useless reply. What part of AT&T are you in, where in the country? What job title (s)? Give us something useful or stop wasting our time. I hope this is not indicative of the amount of effort you put forth in your job. If so, we now know why you got the axe. Good luck.

This is the absolute truth. I have first hand experience. However if you have 20 years and you did your 401k right, and with your pension you should be fine. Get that resume ready!

You speak the truth! I'm over 50 and have more than 20 years and guess what. My last day is March 31st. Foolishly thought if I work hard someday someone would notice. Hahaha Had to be thrown off the crazy merry go round. Thankful to be on solid ground again. #there is a better life after at&t

Do you really think this is just in retail? This is corporate while. This is in all divisions and levels of management. No one is safe, and if you are over 50 with 20+ years of service be ready to be out of work at ATT. Just hope to be gone while severance is still 6 months.

I spent his first ten years in the ATO /IT Operations, moved to a management position for the last ten years, the promised surplus finally came and I gave the company 2 weeks, and I can say with certainty that leaving AT&T was the best decision for my career, with my old knowledge of coding, HTML, CSS and JavaScript I was recently hired by a great company which has inspired me again to do what I used to love doing, for those in the same situation If like fixing things and solving puzzles, you'll probably be a better coder and enjoy work more than someone who is merely doing it for the paycheck and it goes for many lines of work specially when you can be discarded the way they do it, just with an email, not even a phone call.

It's not just in retail. In my group I've watched morale drop, headcount evaporate, and people stuffed in open slots that have no business (or even the right credentials) being paid to fulfill those job requirements. Worthless paycheck collecting bodies.

In the last 5 years the downward slope into the abyss has gotten really steep. I used to think my knowledge of the systems and support structure which let me outperform my peers during outages lent me a small buffer of protection from some of the head count slaughter being dealt out. I don't pretend that's the case anymore.

Everyone needs to start spit shining their resumes and get some sort of external training lined up. 2020 training is garbage. If you're going to invest your time in learning something then at least spend it on a course or cert that a prospective employer will give a rats arse about. When it comes down to it, T is going to let you go regardless of your 2020 completion status and you need to invest in what is going to help you bounce back. The way things have been going it is more than likely you won't be employed by T in 2020 anyway. Do some research. See what jobs are out there, which ones will likely continue to be out there for several years or more, and start taking steps to try to secure one of them now. Good luck to you all.
