Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

A friend asked me about jobs at Qualcomm. This was my reply.

Do you like office politics, where everyone fights for visibility and people take credit for work they don't do? Do you like nepotism and cronyism? A place where managers have too much power because the HR process is broken, where managers promote people who don't do any work by giving them credit for work done by others, and hold back promotions of people who deserve it? This would NEVER happen at companies like Google; the process would prevent it.

It's a place where certain groups of people band together to promote each other (coughIndianscough). It's a place where the office politics are out of hand even when you consider the size of the company. It's a company that's so arrogant, HR doesn't even give referral bonuses. They think they are the best and that should be good enough to get referrals. Who does that? Not Apple, not Google, not most startups that aren't even profitable yet.

I have a nickname for Qualcomm. I call it the Titanic, because it's taking on water and sinking fast. The high end phone manufacturers (Apple and Samsung) are making their own chips. Intel apparently just took half of the iPhone market too. Qualcomm is screwed and is losing more good people every day. I #GTFO recently because I couldn't stand the BS anymore. I mean...if you are desperate for a job, you can apply, but otherwise, don't bother. There are much better companies go work for.

If you're in San Diego and you're in high tech, there's very little choice other than QCOM. This causes people to have a protective attitude towards their job but there's only so much a person can actually contribute. So what do they do? They expand their team and this is actually one of the requirements for managers to get promoted. (To get promoted you need to have a certain numbers of people under you).

Obviously it doesn't take long for managers and directors to realize that their time is much better spent on stabbing other people and stealing people from other manager or projects rather than other menial things such as making their product or service better.

And to be able to get more people it's much easier to recruit folks that you're more comfortable instead of based on performance. Hence the vicious cycle continues ...

I would not go back to QC and would be reluctant to recommend others to work there Since I left the company I have been a lot happier. For the first time in recent years I am looking forward to going to work and getting things done. I used to feel the same at QC many years ago when innovation and research was encouraged.

I agree nepotism is everywhere, Q just has too much, HR process didn't do anything to stop it. If you don't agree, spend sometime to browse the phone book

@ESbd2vU-qph: I am the OP. My friend is in the Bay Area. No reason to even bother walking into that sh**hole.

@ssp: like i said, google is an exception and you cant keep on bringing up the one big exception (there are likely a handful of other ones too, but goog always comes up). Our direct competitors (intc, brcm, samsung, aapl) are very similar if not identical in corporate culture

@ESbd2vU-yah: At least Google tries to stop or limit this by putting proper processes in place. No system is perfect, but it's particularly bad at QCOM. Google hasn't had a 25% increase in the number of Indians in 3-5 years like Q has. The reason for the increase isn't that they're unusually well qualified, it's that they band together to promote their own kind. To be fair, there ARE some good Indians in Qualcomm, but the system they have is unable to root out the bad ones.

Soooo f#@&ing true. Most of the time people fighting for visibility are the ones doing the lousy work. Yes, not a good place to work anymore. But, you can give it a shot for no more then 3 years, if you are already in SD. Otherwise, forget about it...
