I know many Yammer people who have left, it was by choice, not via RIFs - at the same time, Microsoft is so big today that at any given point there are job cuts somewhere. We do hire in parallel, some groups are expanding at a rapid rate, some businesses are dying. It's the nature of the beast and it'll continue to be that way.

For example, look at Apple, they had job cuts on the iCloud side two years ago, and they were expanding that line, but they needed to realign, they needed folks with different skills, etc. They also needed to slow down before they can run, that's kind of what's happening with some businesses we run as well.

@CI648Zp, doesn't look real at all.

I doubt Yammer has ever had 1900 employees. Besides, ~2K RIF in a single group with no media coverage and almost no rumors is impossible.

what groups were impacted on Wednesday 3 February? There was a round of RIFs but only a handful in my old group.

How it is possible 1900+ lay off without any media coverage or announcement?

@CI648Zp-32byt If you think of a career in the "old" way you are only fooling yourself. The era of someone working for a company for longer than 5 years is long past. Hone your skills and learn to market yourselves if you want to survive. The era of "a golden watch and soft retirement package " after 20 - 30 years of devoted service is over. Welcome to the real world bro.

The comment that there will be no layoffs in 2016 was BS. I was part of a group of thousands laid off January 2016. The entire Yammer group got the axe 1900+. My old position was filled by an H1B.

OK, 1500 views - this place is interesting - if you are in MCS and on the bench you may be getting a call

300 RIF'd the week of 1/18/2016 from what I heard. Which means it won't be reported for another 60 days or so. I do know at least 2 personally.

WE have been cutting 200 to 250 people every week for months now, this continues and nothing will stop it - WSJ had an article earlier about switch to the cloud, they estimate we'll cut over 15000 over next 12 months, this is in line with what I was expecting but we'll see what happens...

WE need new skills, much more cloud oriented stuff and less people overall - you will see some MSFT old-timers depart very soon - there is a lot of folks who adopted a #RestAndVest attitude and that's is about to stop - if you do not like it now it may be good time to brush up your resume and see if Microsoft is really a good place for you... Peace out...

There are no waring signs, I think the execs are clear on this topic - there will be ongoing cuts as the reshape the skills pyramid - things will not stop and will be a company wide exercise. If you remember 2002, you will know what I am talking about. This is not a new thing for Microsoft and we have been doing it for a while but as more things move to the Cloud we'll probably accelerate pace of skills change.

I am expecting a radical change on the Sales side as well - a massive reorg is well overdue over there but wait and we'll see what 2016 brings. I am sure things will continue to be in a major flux for at least 24 months, so 2016, 2017 and parts of 2018.

What are the warning signs?

MSFT will bring on another 1500 #H1B folks on board this year - mark my words, they will say that there is a shortage of domestic workers and will hire Indians, happens every year. At the same time they will let go thousands of American workers. 2016 layoffs will likely be bigger than the round we saw in 2015, there is a several warning signs there (and the economy is slowing down too)

MSFT always prunes its ranks, there will be redundancies in 2016 as we continue to focus more on the internet and mobile

Vote for Trump, he will destroy the H1B program, see https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions/immigration-reform

There will be no layoffs at Microsoft in 2016. I think we will continuing to grow. Multiple groups are reporting record earnings, no, there will be no layoffs.

Let's start a poll about the number of folks that we'll let go in 2016. I am predicting cuts in a 5K to 6K range, I know it looks like a lot but this seems to be a reasonable number to me (given the history of layoffs we have experienced in 2014 and 2015)
