Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Mark Hurd was Oracle's Steve Jobs

You were a visionary and will be greatly missed. From all your Oracle family, R.I.P. Mark.

Like another poster said, the only commonality between Jobs and Hurd is that they're now both dead guys.

The only connection between Jobs and Hurd I can think of is that they were both besties with Larry. Perhaps Jobs and Hurd were besties too?

I guess the lure of short term gains and delusions that you can “buy” innovation and bolt it all together is too strong.

Well, true innovation is hard, so most CEOs just slash and cut corners to shore up the bottom line.

@3eqs has to do with how top levels are compensated. In 2000s all companies switched from bonuses to stock options as the main way of comping execs - they immediately started rigging the game by working on increasing the value of options, so short term play... Not much is left now, after buybacks, all that's left is cuts.

“ Gutting R&D in any technical firm is a guarantee of eventual death.”
True, yet you see this happening again and again. I guess the lure of short term gains and delusions that you can “buy” innovation and bolt it all together is too strong.

By gutting R&D at HP he improved the immediate profits at the expense of the future of the company. From being a leader it became a "me too" company. It is difficult to think of any field in which it is still a leader let alone THE leader.

Gutting R&D in any technical firm is a guarantee of eventual death.

If by "visionary," you mean he employed one tool (cost-cutting) then yes, he was a visionary.

As for MH being missed, well LH did lose a tennis partner. But it's a pretty safe bet that LH filled that void a while ago, since MH probably hadn't played any serious tennis for more than a year.

Stock didn’t even drop 1%, you know how important he is.

I don't think anyone was expecting him to return. His departure was already baked into the cake.

Since this site is about layoffs it’s just fitting Hurd deserves a section for all the people he laid off since his NCR days.

I totally agree.

So, I suggest to devote layoff site to Mark Hurd. He definitely deserved it.

Well they were both deeply flawed individuals so maybe the headline is accurate.

What a loss. The man was pure genius. Now Oracle will reap the rewards of a decade of his leadership. Zero innovation, mass layoffs in a hot tech market, inflating cloud sales numbers... all of that work is not lost on Oracle as its sales are starting to flat line too.

Just wish he was here to see the legacy he left behind.
