Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

How many layoffs do we need before someone realizes this isn’t sustainable?

How many roles do they expect the rest of us to absorb while positions go unfilled for months or even forever? Every time someone leaves, the work just gets dumped on whoever’s still standing, like we’re machines with no limits. I’m genuinely curious if leadership thinks we’re robots they can keep overloading without anything breaking.

Layoffs will continue. Possibly every other year or maybe annually. But they will continue.

@zy While I agree with you that COP is not an IT company, I challenge you to tell me anything we do day to day that doesn't have IT stuff involved. Even our rental equipment connects to the cloud and I can run it from my phone.

@xx how can they enable the business when they don’t understand the business?
ConocoPhillips is not an IT company.
In any industry, there needs to be a fundamental understanding of the value chain and corresponding understanding of technology that can improve it.
Otherwise it’s a bunch of IT initiatives that are techy and get IT folk excited but doesn’t add to the bottom line.

@sq IT leadership were hopefully hired because they know how IT works. If they are the ones who are supposed to know how Oil and Gas operations work, why do we have Oil and Gas operation people?

HIRE CONSULTANTS THAT WRITE EVERYTHING WITH CAPS LOCK ON SO THEY SOUND AS SMART AS THE GUY WHO WANTS TO BE THE CONSULTANT.

Specially in IT you can easily cut 40% FTE and there will be zero negative impact. In fact business value delivery will improve. Pathetic leadership who have no clue how oil and gas business functions let alone upstream operations.

CUT MIDDLE MANAGEMENT WITH NO DIRECTIONS OR VISION. KEEP THE WORKER BEES AND EMPOWER THEM TO GET THINGS DONE WITH GOOD STRATEGY AND VISION IN PLACE. NOT EVERYTHING REQUIRES 304847393874 PEOPLES APPROVAL WE WANT LEADERS WHO TRUST PEOPLE TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES AND WONT BE SCAPEGOATS FOR MM. DRAIN THE SWAMP ! EVERYONE WILL BE HAPPIER AND THINGS WILL GET DONE. PAY ME INSTEAD OF CONSULTANTS.

I think the point is to stop the work that doesn't need to be done.

So many tire spinners at this company, if the "work" just stopped no one would notice.

So do you not understand machines (which includes robots)? They have limits by design. Compared to humans who on average perform well under their capabilities. We could easily get the work completed competently with a 40% reduction.

No wonder we are scrambling. You want to revisit this topic again!? Here:
Interesting comments about what happens to the work. Much of the “work” is non value adding activity. For example, on the HSE side much of what we do and is required by the company is not required by law or code. We think if a little is good then a lot is better. Does it add value? That is the question to be answered. If yes, then by all means proceed. If not, eliminate the non value adding activity. We can easily cut 40% of staff and not adversely impact safety, production or compliance.

@b2 This 100% and that is why this round of layoffs needs to be primarily focused on leadership (especially middle management). Generally speaking, the “leaders” at this company literally do nothing and add no real value. They barely even know what the teams under them really even do on a day to basis they just exist in a world of needless meetings and forced busyness. Cut them and you solve the majority of the problems with this place all the while reducing their bloated and undeserved salaries.

That is one of the reasons for competitive edge. Identify and stop all the useless work that doesn't need to be done. I bet a lot of what you are doing is because we have always done it like that.

Interesting point, I am wondering the same thing? At some point you have to question if you want to be the one to stay or put out of your misery and get let go? Maybe the oil industry isn't the place to be anymore.

there is only so many hours in the day. Sometimes hard to do work because of all the meetings on the calendar and regulations/compliance things that we do. Cut all that stuff and we can do more work. But until we behave as a small independent, then we can't operate on shoestring staffs (think Hilcorp without supply chain atmosphere)
