Thread regarding USAA layoffs

They're coming for your trash cans!!!

Yeppers, this is 100% true. We're looking for pennies to save by having the budget police come for your individual trash cans and have them consolidated into one big happy community trash can. This reeks of crazy desperation: it's like trying to find an open bathroom stall while a rumbling Mount Vesuvius is ready to explode out of your azz. Are we really that broke that we need to consolidate trash cans? This is a first for sure. Anyone else seeing other inane budget cutting measures out there?

It probably is extremely time consuming for the cleaners to go to tens of thousands of individual trash cans -- empty them, replace the bags, etc.

A very quick job individually, but I can see that adding thousands of man-hours throughout the year.

First they came for the trash cans and I said nothing...

My former company did this before chase - about 18 years ago. They said it was to support sustainability efforts and my favorite quote from the communication “it encourages employees to interact with their waste” - there was a collective guffaw across the cubes when we all read it. I think it’s the only memo from my career that I can still quote. Lol

OMG. They are copying Chase. And all those community trash cans did was annoy employees. It doesn’t save much money but hurts the culture. Ugh.

Maybe I am right or maybe I am wrong but I am sure the OP is not that upset over trash cans. They are probably upset that it is just one more thing that is being taken away. First, being able to wfh home, then getting 2 days to wfh, and now in January-only 1 day. Then it was the change in benefits, then it was the change in PTO accrual, then is was changes to education assistance, then it was demotions and lower salaries to keep your job, in addition to co-workers continuing to lose their jobs due to layoffs. They just take and take - now while the trash is truly so minimal, that is just one MORE thing. What is next?! What do they have left to take?! I am sure in their truest fashion, they will continue to find things in the spirit of keeping the lights on.

@cwx+1p9WKk33 If that were true wouldn't they do the same with the Executive Management team?

It has nothing to do with the cost of the small trash cans. The cost lies in paying a third party to pick up and change out the trash at each desk daily. Other companies are doing the same to control unnecessary expenses.

It sounds like a good plan. No need to pay for a cleaning crew to go to every desk daily to empty/change trash. Small changes add up to big savings.

They got rid of individual trash cans because of the rats in the building.

They did this in our area before the pandemic, I just assumed it was done in all buildings. What is insane is the cleaning crew having to check each individual desk for trash, put in a whole new bag because of a sheet of paper, how efficient is that. As a member and employee, this is a waste of resources. If you are complaining about it, put a trash can in every room of your house and through the trash out daily and see how much time and money it cost you. You can’t complain when USAA is trying to do better. Just maybe this saves the salary for 1 person’s job. I think rather than seeing another team member laid off, we can all agree to go throw our trash away that is 20 steps away. And before you start saying this is Wayne, come check out area in D01E.

Not sure quite that insane when considering other costs associated with waste removal to include vendor fees. Could also be lucrative when aggregated with other cost saving strategies. Maybe they are trying to do everything they can to save jobs? So much focus on the negative here.
