Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Vicki: We ask for equality

We all know layoffs are very likely in the near term. Vicki, if you are reading this, we ask for equality In the next round of layoff. VP, managers, directors, leads should be on the list as well. Just because they have the management positions within Oxy should not make their families any better than ours. Why should the families with lower income always suffer more than those who have been enjoying bigger paychecks? They are at better chance to “weather the storm” anyway assuming they have saved up more money than us before all this started.

You mentioned that we need to focus on values. I couldn’t agree more. In fact, we should have done that over the past few years while growing in Permian. How much values were destroyed by all these greedy Permian managers, directors, leads, etc. I have been with Oxy for close to 10 years now, and I am really disappointed with the type of people that got promoted over the past couple of years. How many of these directors, for example, were intentionally drilling bad wells? How honest have they been with their AFE? It is not too complicated to put a value on someone now based on what they have truly delivered in the past. This will be a fair game to those managers who had actually done good things for the company in the past. Focus on the assets that were (consistently) delivering negative values and start asking questions about who, what, and why.

I certainly am not asking to lay off only managers, directors, VP, leads, etc. I just think we should be valued equally in the decision making process. This is especially important when you already have way tooooooo many managers in the organization to begin with. You need us worker bees to get the jobs done. If we are working from home more in the future, these meeting-goers don’t really deliver much value going forward.

@1uoq+15bNHLZt Yup. Look at this thread- 200 reactions, which grossly exceeds the moving average of all other threads.

So sublety grade = F. Grade is in line with their usual quality of deliverable.

If they had spent more time on their work would have been beneficial.

@1ydi+15bNHLZt them downvoting might be the most productive they've been in the last decade as a department.

Bravo. Hahahahaha

Welp, HR can figure out who's on these boards. With the early votes in being about split between ups and downs when talking about IT, it appears that about half of the traffic here is from IT. No wonder our IT department is so worthless - they spend all of their time surfing the web.

IT should be another conversation on its own. The Oxy IT group is completely laughable. They try and build software programs within the company instead of outsourcing them. So we end up using Oxy’s useless color by numbers software with its multiple limitations vs. well put together professional software from companies whose only business is software design.

@ulg+15bNHLZt They don't need to change the IP. I am not even sure if they know what IP is. But remember they have four redundant VPs and 25 even more useless directors. So do the math! They can down vote by 29.

Interesting findings. Seem IT is monitoring this forum and found a way to change IP address to devote multiple times to make the comment neutral. lol

Mid level managers and above SHOULDN’T be on the list. Most of you cretins voted for Trump, who touts trickle down economics, yet you’re upset the bottom feeders are being let go? You deserve what you get!! Mid managers and above should get golden parachutes as they drive the company towards bankruptcy. By the way, I could care less if you thumb this post down...truth hurts!

Oxy IT Management is useless and so political. They don't think with their brain. They keep poor performers and kick highest performing folks out. It is how you treat your people. If you treat people like Sh!t you are going to get Sh!tty results.

Also speaking of your IT management, useless VPs and Directors I can name more than 10 right now that should have been long gone but no Vicki you still paying like never before.

@tdj+15bNHLZt Lowest performing department on earth. The entire department can be outsourced for a fraction of the cost and at 10 times the productivity.

No idea why a vendor supported application needs a team of 10 to support it. And then the performance and use case out in the field is pathetic.

Hopefully they didn't give them raises when they promoted them.

That may be why some people say that APC employees are overpaid to Oxy employees. Because they try comparing similar titles. But at APC, we didn't have multiple VPs in land, IT, or many of the areas where Oxy has multiple incompetent VPs. Compare based on responsibility, job requirements, etc. Compare Oxy VPs to APC Directors, and Oxy Directors to APC Managers, etc. on down the chain, and you'll get a truer comparison. Oxy sure likes their titles, and hands them out like candy.

@1xf+15bNHLZt you brought up a great point about IT. Somebody tells me how in the world suddenly four directors in IT become VPs and all their managers become directors with minimum to zero changes in their responsibilities and the number people they manage. No justification of course; the only reason is the self-promoting CIO that has direct access to Hawaiian T-shirt man. Just crazy! #MakeITLean

Cannot agree more. Mid management needs to be cut. Too many layers. One manger with one or non direct report? Two directors in the same department? Cannot understand why do we need those people. It is also a joke when you see four VP report to one VP. Really don’t how that got approved.

Unfortunately @zag+15bNHLZt HR has their own issue with not addressing their own poor performers. One director in particular has been addressed several times by peers, business managers, employees, etc and nothing can or will be done due to protection from the highest level. So I’m not surprised HR can’t do anything about the manager you have referenced since they can’t take care of their own issues.

Excellent request on asking for equality! The problem is Oxy leadership lacks quality! Multiple leads, managers, directors, all the way up the ladder of management have been promoted without ever demonstrating any success in their previous positions, with many being complete failures.
This type of favoritism without any lack of accountability is exactly what has gotten Oxy into near bankruptcy. Don’t expect the current poor leadership that has been put into place over the past decade to do anything other than protect themselves at the expense of everyone else.

Yes, more layoffs are coming for LOXY. LAPC will not be laid off. Unfortunately we'll get to work out our full three years unless there is a COC triggering event which will be much less likely after August.

Won’t happen. I have only seen one manager fired in years and years at Oxy. He p-ss-d off the manager directly above him. Oxy has a huge problem with this and I’m not sure why. When a group starts complaining about management they transfer them or demote eventually. There is one manager that has at least ten positions or more at Oxy within just a few years on his LinkedIn from being transferred so many times. They will not get rid off this @$$hole. Multiple teams have went to HR about him.

Very thoughtful write up , I completely agree with your analysis. I also believe that we lost focus over the years in some BU’s, we focused more on production growth even though they were uneconomical. OXY used to be great in delivering value based projects. The real question is how did we approve projects with weak & unrealistic economic baselines? We clearly have more people than we need, focus now should really be on identifying our core talents and positioning them in their strength areas so we can succeed. Let’s reduce some unnecessary management layers especially if we are in a “low to no growth” environment.
