Is it really that bad here? Like, so bad you wouldn't recommend this place to folks?

This place is not a cesspool. It's much worse. All joking aside, it's totally incompetent. Big G should be embarsed to show up at any industry events.
If they ever wanted to clean up this cesspool of an organization they should clean house of all the middle management with 20 or 30 years at the company. They are the reason why this place is a toxic hellscape. Instead they get rid of the low level workers who keep their lhis place running. The company sucks, avoid like the plague.
I can honestly tell you, avoid this place. The posts on this subject are very true. Everyone I work with is looking for another job.
@ylwo+1lQJIVkU Our exectuives are "Yes People" they are week and easy to manipulate with money and pormises of more money and power. They are not leaders! This is a business and its purpose is to make the few rich on the backs of its employees.
@ylwo+1lQJIVkU - Why are executives not paid the lowest wage possible. They too are employees of the company, but somehow are valued 400-800% more.
Fiduciary obligation to maximize investor returns or is it redistribution of wealth to the top 1% using “fiduciary obligation” as the excuse.
Like all public companies, we have a fiduciary obligation to maximize investor returns. As employees, you are paid the lowest wage possible to achieve the above mentioned. You will be led to believe you are important, you have job security, and the company cares about you. These are the tools companies use to get what they need.
Avoid the place at all costs!
If you are a Narcissist or a Sociopath it’s a great place to work 😀
Rif’s were always a puzzle. Why one good steady performer, while another who worked at same geographic location as the director is retained. Even though that person’s performance is poor. Personalities/politics. Happens at most companies, but Anthem being so large it’s very apparent. Also interesting how anthem does the rif’s spreadout by months and locations. Thereby keeping their overall huge layoffs out of the news.
Being in IT is truly horrible at this place. The politics are cutthroat. If you're young and smart you'll likely have your own teammates try to make you look bad to your face and certainly will behind your back. I've even seen direct managers layoff their top staff member because they were perceived a career threat. It really is a pit of snakes. A good indicator on whether you should trust someone is their totally years at the company.. The more years in the more you should be weary. I'm glad I'm finally out of this place.
How bad is it? Well… some years ago I was lured to IT by a former associate. I left a good paying job with great benefits because I was offered a little bit higher salary at a time I could have really used the extra money. 6 months into the job my team was invited to go to meetings with a gentleman from some planning team. It didn't take long to figure out he was gathering our roles and responsibilities for an RFP to outsource our jobs. I had the indignation to have to help in the process and I didn't sleep for 3 months angry at myself for making such a huge career error in coming to this organization. Fast forward we didn't lose our jobs then, but couple years later we eventually did and out the door we all went. Whatever extra I made in salary I lost being unemployed for a number of months. Moral of the story? If you're in IT your job is always going to be evaluated and the threat of job loss will always be hanging over your head. It happens at other places too but nowhere near the level it does here.
It's definitely cliquey. It becomes really apparent when layoffs come and some of the most useless associates are retained and the high performing are shown the door. It all comes down to who you know. Drinking buddies with the boss? Ride mountain bikes or golf together? Wives or husbands are friends? That's what separates who stays and who gets laid off.
"Career Purgatory"
Look elsewhere! By far the most toxic and cliquey/cult like environment I have ever experienced. On top of that, you are always put in fear of your job from the constant layoffs or direct threats by your manager. I agree that the benefits are not great either.
If you wish to work in a toxic environment where you are always targeted for layoff … then this is the company for you …
I'm going to be the unwelcomed comment. It really depends on a couple factors. Are you looking for an IT job or business? If it's IT than I tend to agree with the other comments. Another factor to consider is what area of the company are you looking into. I was on one side of the company for over 20 years and the culture was cut throat and felt most times that you had a number and at some point in time your number would be called and out the door you go. This happened to me. I ended up coming back into a different part of the company and it's been a breath of fresh air. Great culture, great teams working together and leadership supports and encourages everyone.
One persons he-l is another persons heaven. But, in this case, that's not the case!
Just STAY AWAY !!!
Don't Do It!
I would not recommend. Toxic culture, thick corporate politics, frequent reorgs, general disorganization, and often petty management. Bonuses aren't what they used to be under the current leadership and raises are below the rate of inflation. Health insurance is just the run of the mill high deductible plan. If you have no other option but to come here I suggest negotiating the highest possible salary, maximizing every available benefit (401k match, HSA, etc) while "playing the corporate game". Take more than you give to this company and you might find it tolerable in the short to medium term. Don't stick around long.
That's right. I would not refer someone that I know and love to come work here . This company has gone sideways
