Nike HR: Can’t get it right for themselves

I’m genuinely curious if anyone else wonders what’s going on with Nike’s HR function. The constant layoffs, reorgs, and shifting structures are confusing at best and destabilizing at worst. If HR can’t get things right for themselves, how are they supposed to get it right for the rest of the company?

In my experience working with that team, it’s a mix of highly competent people and others who are… not. Like many parts of Nike, it often comes down to who you know and how willing you are to step over others to get ahead.

The latest move…eliminating the head of Recruiting and burying the function should be a signal to everyone. Maybe the person in the role wasn’t the right fit, but that’s neither here nor there. The bigger concern is the direction of the function as a whole. It feels like we’re heading into a darker period, and the signs are all there.

@e5 For goodness sake. You can’t be serious if you are blaming the HR issues on Finance. I’m willing to bet that finance came to realize the ROI of HR so they made a financial decision that was best for Nike. Imagine that…Not making a a decision that is best for the self serving leaders trying to build their empire. It’s called doing business and not just chilling out a couple days a week with your groupies.

How about we get rid of the ridiculous idea that we need an HRBP to sit with the functions that they “support.” What purpose does this serve? I have an idea….How’ about when HR is needed they are called upon, and I mean People Solutions, not someone’s buddy in HR. If it’s for strategy it’s DEFINITELY not working - just take a look around. Instead we have them attending offsite drunk fests, parties and just hanging out. Their presence isn’t needed. Their incompetence is the problem. Terrible “leaders” guiding “terrible leaders”. Seems like a lack of common sense. Anyone else?

@y2 Not one!!! DO NOT TRUST HR OR THE SPEAK UP PORTAL. If you have valid concerns there are lawyers everywhere that will talk to you.

Is there anyone on current HRLT that you trust and aspire to be? I cannot find a single leader who I admire on this leadership team.

@hj aka self serving, egotistical, micromanaging and unethical. We have a lot of those unfortunately. They can only hide behind their mask for so long because I believe that people are going to start calling those leaders out. The behavior is so unethical we may see them depart and THEN things will turn around. As long as we have self serving leaders we will continue going down the toilet. Speak up.

When leaders of the org are focused on “self” versus “serve” this is the outcome.

Some good ones came and left.

@e5 can you elaborate on this? What were they fighting over?

@fe there are good people in there, but the bad outshine them. The good ones eventually leave.

Someday… Nike HR might actually get great leadership, but I don’t know if that will be in my life time.

Nike HR is compromised by co-mies, it's the closest inner circle you can find at Nike, closer by ideology more than association as with the likes of Tech. They only let the brightest and finest people inside. lol.

There was a power struggle between finance and hr and finance won, now we get to see the aftermath and it's not going to be fun

@dp that’s how our corrupt promotions work. It’s all about who you know. Pathetic! Do an anonymous speak up. Were others offered the same position? What are the qualifications and do they meet them. Speak up but be anonymous. I courage others to do the same.

someone in HR went from entry to a sr director in like 6-7 years? I can’t speak to their specific work accomplishments, but they are very closely related to a prior hr exec.

@ae I don’t disagree with OP and definitely don’t disagree with you on the recruiting leadership. Nike Recruiting was where people just go to hang out and spend money. That was somewhat cleaned after Covid, but the poor leadership is still there.

For the greater HR organization, I feel they’ve made a step back with this organizational change when momentum was starting to build with now the previous model. Relying on your strategic organization to guide your “future programs” is beyond concerning. Most people in the strategy organization are people who have politically moved up the chain, not because of merit.

I feel HR was at its best when COE guided the handed of HR which is how we got wellness week. Now the power is back with strategy and Business Hr, I’m concerned we slipping back into old Nike of 2014-2018 with no core strategy and BHR is driving their own ship(s).

TA leadership and their directors are NOT good. That whole function needs a reset. Many incompetent people who are overpaid to underperform

Honestly, the Recruiting team deserves better. They’ve survived five years of clueless leadership and perpetual confusion. Half the time they don’t even know what org they sit in. Hard to “drive talent strategy” when you’re constantly rebuilding your own.
