Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

My motivation is dead

How are you folks staying motivated? My productivity has gone to he-l lately. I'm so tired of seeing my hard work ignored and buttkissing rewarded that I'm at the point where I barely try anymore. Nepotism and cronyism have taken over and unless you know the right people whatever you do will go unnoticed. So why even bother?

I think Steve Jobs said it best in a graduation speech he gave in 2005 at Stanford.

Maybe take a listen and if you don't have that long, just skip to about the 9;00 minute mark. Maybe it is time to start looking in that mirror and asking this question to yourself. Best wishes.

Keep cashing the checks while you look for a better job. That’ll give you something to look for.

So was mine. Quit oil and gas.

I thought everything sucked everywhere. Then I started working elsewhere. It’s just ConocoPhillips.

People are starting to realize this and I hope the last few people worth anything gtfo and let the “leaders” and their “strategies” atrophy.

Wrapped up too much in any company will not help anyone. Make sure you have balance (no office in any industry will give this you have to make it happen), activity, exercise and interests outside the office. That doesn’t mean you won’t have these same feelings but at least you won’t physically detriment yourself short or long term.

Don’t let the mess in your immediate group or the entire place pull you down outside the office. Agree with @xes+1aPJMw3C work is appreciated even if not currently recognized. The last year and a half outside of the company & E&P issues has been hard on everyone and covid made it worse, then the layoffs then the changes. HR if you are listening pay attention.

Here's some unsolicited advice. Stop being concerned about being noticed. Work on projects that interest you intellectually and improve the performance of your immediate group. The satisfaction that comes from doing a good job is what makes us feel relevant. Although it's frustrating to have your contributions ignored by management, your work is likely appreciated by at least some of your peers.

Understand we're all replaceable cogs in a large, slowly rusting machine. If you can't find projects that inspire you, then maybe it's time to ask yourself the hard question about why you're in this industry, since all E&P's have similar issues. Don't let it be all about the money.
