Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Nobody seems to be hiring

There are plenty of job postings all around, but I keep seeing the same ones again and again, just with different dates attached. It's like the companies are posting job openings without having any intention of filling them. Am I only imagining things? Have others noticed anything similar?

There is still hiring occuring but the major banks have been doing it in spurts usually a couple months after large layoffs. Even USAA still routinely hires leaders and risk consultants externally to the detriment of internal talent.

There are jobs out there but they take extra effort right now. Especially the good ones in tech or anything remote. I knew 💩 was gonna hit the fan back in Dec 22 when my manager abruptly left and thats when I started applying. Didn't get any solid bites until July 2023 and from that point the interview process took me over 3 months for the job I officially landed which is remote and pays more... Right now everyone is looking for jobs so you gotta bring your A game.

I am a Sr. Engineer, and at one company I was at, they decided they wanted to turn me perm. So they created a posting for the job that they told me would go external, but hey assured me that I would get the job. And yes, they did what I was told. So that part k can personally attest is true for some positions.

I think that any company can come up with a reason to not hire you and claim that you are not qualified.i personally believe that is why they make the job descriptions exhaustive. It they want, they could waive a requirement or they can say "the candidate did not have" xyz.

If you think about it, doing this and then hiring a less expensive resource is a way to keep salaries low. I also think, just as we saw at USAA, they may need a set of skills but not be willing to upskill their staff.

They are sly boots!

@wgt+1qaJ01Pm as a previous hiring manager at USAA your assumptions are just not true. A company doesn't just post jobs for the sake of posting, that would require the agreement of every single manager in the company. There are rules around how long and how many times you can post a job internally after which if a qualified candidate is not found the req is closed and they come up with a different plan on filling the role. The reality is, that unless its an entry level role, many are not qualified.

When I was laid off about ten years ago I had a hard time finding work as an older engineer. Because I was looking for engineering jobs it quickly became apparent that many of the jobs being posted were for the same positions and most of them were never filled.

There must be a reason that companies keep posting jobs that they have no intention of filling, perhaps it is to allow hiring of workers on a visa, because they couldn't fill the job or so they say.

Since that experience, I have had no reason to trust any of the job data coming out of DC.

Or they're posting the jobs to satisfy an outward search requirement while knowing all along they have a hand-picked candidate within.
