HAMR is ramping up! There is demand for HAMR for the next two quarters. Seagate is ahead of Western D in terms of technology and the heavy investment in capital equipment.
MC Hammer devliering hit song or Heavy D delivering HAMR?
@jsq Never said that the customers would be "All in." This isn't simply a new capacity on a HDD, HAMR is a new technology. It has significant issues, which is why the customers are currently running tests on it. Some comments claim that those tests aren't going all that well. If you release a product that customers are rejecting in tests, then you're risking public embarassment that investors will notice when the orders don't come in. Can Seagate actually afford to have a new HAMR product fail to get orders out of the gate? The answer is NO. Perhaps Seagate will entice a customer to make an order by providing some other form of compensation. After Huawei, this appears to be a decision our executives would consider.

I can also bake a batch of cookies and hand pick a dozen that weren’t burnt, dropped on the floor, or failed my kids taste tests. The challenge is repeating that recipe so the 100 I trashed to get that dozen are not overflowing my trash bin.
@vve - Since when have customers proclaimed ahead of time they are all in on a given product by a given company? That doesn't happen in the disc drive world.
complete a qual with one customer and claim first qualified HAMR drive victor, which simply serves as bragging rights and the analysts buying into hopium
Would the company actually put HAMR to market when no customer has said they would buy it?
