Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

A large round of VRB would solve the age issue

The age thing is a separate issue. Because turnover was so low for so long the average age of the company's employees is very high. Compared to the average age of employees at competitor orgs, it's extremely high. That does not look good for IPO. A workforce that skews heavily older is expensive and more prone to health problems and more prone to quitting if the company is acquired and changes most or all of how the company is run.

A large round of VRB would solve this problem pretty quick. If it's true that we have seen the last of the buyouts then we can expect to see more people retiring or being laid off a little here and a little there. The pockets of layoffs will create a climate of fear and distrust if the leadership is not transparent about what is going on and why. someone posted a link in another thread that described very well the effects of this approach and remaining employees. It might feel kind or look gentle, but it is not the solution.

We get up at 12 and start to work at 1

Take an hour for lunch and then at 2 we're done

Jolly good fun!

Ha-ha-ha! Ho-ho-ho! And a couple of tra-la-las

“So the hard workers will work hard no matter where they are (in office or from home), and the slackers will slack off no matter where they are....”

You would think one of these would have some impact on who gets axed, but it doesn’t seem to matter

So the hard workers will work hard no matter where they are (in office or from home), and the slackers will slack off no matter where they are....lol. It all evens out for SAS.

Just like those on campus...some will roll in, get some breakfast at the sas cafe, have a coffee break at Starbucks, hit the sas gym, get some lunch at the sas cafe, time for another coffee break at Starbucks, hit the sas gym on the way home. One sas does not fit all.

Some will work more from home, some will work less, and some will work the same. That's just how it is with working from home. SAS knows that.

Same - but didn’t make a difference in the end, still laid off

I am able to work MORE because I am at home. Here there are fewer distractions. And, I work when I would have been driving so that I am more accessible to my overseas colleagues.

I honestly put in at least 8 hours per day while working from home.

So why not pay them less to do it! Make them officially part time :)

I have wondered why companies are not more open to letting older employees go part time to open the door to let younger people join up.

I'm envious of those who are nearing retirement and have had long and successful careers at SAS. Yes, maybe your career might get cut short by a few years if you get made redundant, but you've had decades of successful work.

I'm lucky, as I successfully left SAS a few years ago and move to another tech company and hope to ride it out for the last 10-15 years of my career.

BUT I worry about my kids. One is studying Computer Science at university. Learning how to code. But who's going to need that skill in a few years time? The leaps in generative AI we have seen in the last year or so, are staggering and quite frankly, scary. Will a career in software development, even be a thing in a few years time? Who knows. The pace of change is so rapid, how do young people planning to enter the workforce, possibly prepare with such uncertainty?

Generative X, may well be the last generation to have reliable, well paid, life long careers in IT.

When did age become an issue? Is this Logan's Run?

"You never think it will happen to you, whatever it is. Then it does.
You're young, feel chosen, and believe you are on top of the world. Who can stop you?

You will cross paths with an agent of chaos. It will end your run. Then you'll be just like the rest of us. Best of luck."

Or .. even more likely, one day this person will simply wonder in amazement and perplexity about how is it possible he/she is 60!

But ... we don't fault them too much for their arrogance and condescension because we were once like them. We just chuckle knowing that their day will come .. much sooner than they realize.

I am an “age issue”. I’d gladly take a buyout and go somewhere else.

@wmk
Wow, discriminate much? Bet you would never make that assertion based on gender or race, anonymous or otherwise, but you're perfectly okay with age discrimination.

That's interesting, because I can promise you my next old-timer's paycheck that the young people on my team couldn't fill my shoes if they worked around the clock.

I mean dang it's a good thing you'll never age right?

Do I have blue hair ? Nope, some grey tho . Am I nice ? I guess so , but have been called out before for being too blunt. Have I worked here for decades? Yes. Was each year the same, as far as type of responsibility ? No. But how dare you lump all into one barrel, ready to toss us all into the ocean ! I can say, beyond a shadow of my grey haired reflection , that I have busted it over past years. And believe my efforts have made a difference for the company and group of people I support/work with. Hopefully, when you get to the grey haired stage of life, some person tosses you into the barrel .
PS I like to think that I work with ‘nice’ people.

... I thought they went to unlimited vacation. Am I mis-informed?

Yes, you were mis-informed. We were told that according to those who accord, employees tend to take fewer vacation days with an unlimited-vacation package, than are taken with a specific-number policy.

People have vacation days carry over. Up to 30 days allowed them to use up these days with insurance still in effect. Some people have 30 days to find another job at SAS or else they're gone (most of the time they won't be able to find another job within SAS). SAS does not update the directory daily or weekly. Sometimes it takes a while for them to update the directory and it could take up to a month.

A lot of people take the 30 days to extend their health insurance for another month.

The bluehairs are all hanging on hoping for a big payout. Because decades of being employed here whilst doing pretty much nothing isn't enough for them. They want a nice cash bonanza on their way out too. Death to productivity per employee by a thousand tiny cuts. That's what these people are. I don't care how nice they are. Nice doesn't pay the bills. Contribute to the bottom line or GTFOH.

"...only to remain in the directory for 30 days, which in and of itself is telling."

What does it tell you, exactly? Thirty days is the most leave you can take when you leave SAS (resign or retire, or are allowed to resign or retire). They pay you for the rest.

This craziness cannot go on.

I have never seen an org so topheavy with "decision makers" and strategists and advisors and so precious few people to do the actual work. managers and directors and vice presidents oh my!

the previous VRB packages have created a situation where I think a lot of 60+ folks are not retiring in hopes of a package being offered.

Human nature being what it is ... the previous VRB packages have created a situation where I think a lot of 60+ folks are not retiring in hopes of a package being offered.

If SAS has decided to not offer if again in the foreseeable future, my advice to Dr. G/HR would be to get the word out in one form or another.

We all know that G does not want to be in the news for layoffs and therefore will stay below the WARN threshold for sure, while one by one people quietly disappear as we have been seeing. Some are extra odd and send email 2 days before their last day announcing their departure (2 entire threads about this director in R&D have disappeared from this site) only to remain in the directory for 30 days, which in and of itself is telling.
