Any news on this?

As discussed in previous threads, layoffs in early July will target Managers with a low number of reports to consolidate teams.

sometimes it's hard to find something to laugh about, but watch Steve Harvey's standup on firing a white man and a black many. It's very funny and eases some of the tension.

If you are a manager doing individual contributor work, your days are numbered. In many cases, the company wants you to leave so they don’t need to pay severance. They want whole teams gone so they can replace with low cost workers that will work crazy hours, be willing to train AI models, and put up with complex internal red tape due to aging systems and broken processes. This is what share holders want. If Mark tries to do otherwise, he will be let go by the board of directors. The only hope is that some miracle AI product will emerge, if not, the company will be sold for parts. The only positions being replaced in high cost areas are executives and sales…. Everything else is AI or being replaced with workers with annual salaries below $20k.

In some orgs, enough individual contributors have been laid off that managers are already filling in for them.

@vn It's an issue when it decrease efficiency without enough folks and experience to run the company. Also, layoff has an impact. A human impact. A cascading impact.

What you’re referring to is an industry practice, called spans and layers. Most organizations performed this annually and force the organization to become more efficient. It is perfectly normal to expect a manager to have more than one or two direct reports. I don’t see why this is such a big issue.

Besides this yearly rituals … be aware that MB is good with his vulture skills. He usually tightens more on employees when outside market is not in good state.. even though it may not be impacting OT much. Look around covid time, he was first to cut people and salary.. in anticipation…

@az What a wonderful perspective when tech layoffs are happening all over because a computer will do the job better. Tell those devs who have spent a lifetime learning, with families to support that they should have no problem reinventing themselves since they have little to no chance of finding a job in tech again.

I still see many managers with low resource count, doing adhoc jobs, while high performing guys gone.
Remember when you have yearly survey,though it is anonymous… but I know who expressed anguish , are gone in April, May.

When you go through a layoff, you realize how much of your identity was tied up in your job. It's a chance to rediscover who you are without the title. The most important thing to remember during a layoff is that your value as a person is not determined by your employment status.

Idk about big layoffs. Most the extra 400 came from China office closure. Maybe a few here or there.
