Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Why would any union endorse the merger

The dum dums at SMART are telling their people this will be good for them. LOL!

I guess bringing PSR to Norfolk and scrapping switch yards and such will be great for everyone.

UP will contribute to congestion and meltdown by making all switch crews work with air cut in and flat switch the cuts of huge blocks in the yards and
Industrial leads. Secure, cut ,pull, shove.
Bring a ice chest and sleeping bag for sleeping in the cabs.

A union without the ability and will to strike is mostly useless. Its appalling how everywhere throughout UP’s system managers lie, threaten, break laws, abuse employees, etc. If the unions would strike, straight up stop all work just a few times when a manager is just rude to just one employee. 99% of us all would be treated like first class human beings by 99% of management. Its that simple.

@v0 Why are you on here "bickering" with someone who had enough of the BS at the railroad and can actually see the unions for what they are? I agree with both of you, but I have to disagree with the union dues objector idea entirely. All your doing is throwing money away by paying dues. I've been a union worker for almost 30 years, and I've learned that even the unions are almost as crooked as the railroads themselves. There is a way to get out of paying dues and whoever that is found a solid way to do it by leaving the railroad. Good for him and wish him well! Anyone has a right to be here and say whatever they want without someone like you calling them out by questioning them why they're here if they've moved on from the UP. You can stand up for the unions all you want, but there's more and more people everyday that are turning on the unions because those people are starting realize how much they're being ripped off by the very unions that were formed to protect them from the harsh business practices of the railroads. The finer point is that you're starting union argument over dues that so many of us are starting to realize that aren't being used for what they're intended for. It's really not argument you want!

@sw if ya moved on with a different career, then why you on here bickering with something we can't help, and that's being part of the union. Never did I say it's Great, Awesome Union. I'm simply stating, there's no way to get out of the union completely. Go be happy and enjoy your new career. UP must live in your head rent free.

Hey Mr. or Ms. Union dues objector! You're not making a very good argument here. Pay a portion of your dues, be a union dues objector, and get sh1t on with less money. You can pay your full dues, not be a union dues objector, and still get sh1t on with even less money. The unions haven't been treating it's members very fairly at all, all while they're taking the members money and getting nothing in return except fancier and fancier lip service with increasing union due pricing! Guess what, many people including myself have gone onto other careers and yes most of us are very happy with it. Oh and I don't pay any dues either. You're obviously a proud union member from your postings. You go ahead and trust those rail unions if you want to because many people in the industry have lost faith in them. Let us know how it goes for you when that fancy union member title your paying for does nothing for you, but at least you'll be proud that you paid your dues.

@qy that's the only option, you pay a small portion, other. Than that, you tell the union your not paying at all, and you let us know how that goes for ya. You won't be happy with the results. It's either full union dues, or union dues Objector, or you find a nonunion job.

Who cares what it's called? Why the he-l should anyone pay ANY dues for services they're not getting? So you only pay a portion of the dues just to say your in the union? I can save several hundred dollars by not paying any of it! If you like giving other people for no reason at all, then be my guest. It's the same as paying for a golf club membership and never actually going to the club to play golf. You paid for a title and nothing else other than to tell others that you're a member.

@q3 it's called a Union Dues Objector. You only pay a portion of union dues and still belong to the union. A big chunk of union dues goes to political donations. Not sure the exact amount, but it's like 40 to 50 percent lower than regular union dues.

I would say to start withholding those union dues until things change for it's members. There's got to be a way to do that! Like the first response said, "why pay for the representation thats not being given". We have a right to know what our dues are being used for other than making the union leaders rich. If our dues aren't being used appropriately, then stop the payments to them. That'll get the unions attention real dam fast!

The BLET wouldn't be as stupid would they? Just got a agreement with a 18% raise for 4 years of he-l, working for this outfit, with 20.000 foot trains and cr-ppy
equipment.

Just a guess, but I would believe that Vena thinks that if he can get one of the larger railroad unions to agree to the merger, there would have a better chance of the merger going through. If that’s the case he found one. There’s probably a good chance that a “deal” was made with that particular union in exchange for their endorsement. I could be wrong, but I’d bet the members of that union didn’t get to vote on it.

It will be called a Union Dues Objector, you would pay a reduced amount every month, still be in the union. You just don't pay as much. Not sure exactly but it's not the full amount, I'm sure you will be black listed by the union for it.

Not the SMART union but yeah I witnessed my union officials go berzerk over one guy wanting to pay a reduced rate and not being a member. The union officials were all over that poor guy. I interrupted and asked the officials very loudly in front of everyone, “why dont you guys ever use that tone of voice when a manager violates our contract and mistreats us members?” You couldve heard a pin drop, total silence, they were stunned, they left the guy wanting to opt out alone after that. I swear they think they’re job is too kindly explain to us one time why we have to accept whatever the carrier wants.

I would say probably because the unions know they can always find other members. Why would any union fight for it's current members, when it's less paperwork for them to deal with by getting replacement members. I have yet to see ANY union actually do heavy lifting for it's members. The only thing I've ever seen a union do is get ugly with it's own members over the members refusal to pay dues for representation that's not in the members best interest. Why pay for the representation that's not being given? SMART-TD is a great example of one of those unions.
