Springtown to close

Operations to be wound down at Springtown within the next 2 years. After exhaustive talks with the CEO of Enterprise NI, a press release will be made on May 22nd. Negotiations had been ongoing with civil servants in the Dept of Infrastructure. All HAMR production is to move to MNC. SOLAS equipment is to be moved to the new fab area in MNC, at the beginning of 2024. R&D at Springtown to be reduced by 80% by December 2023. All contracts and Springtown to be cancelled. This is part of the resizing of the company.

It’s been paused for a year because the company ran out of cash to complete the transfer.

So I guess you can really write whatever you want here? I read lots of conspiracy theories about big brother and doomsday scenarios. All completely unsubstantiated. So here is my tuppence worth and I know what I am talking about. Elon Musk was seen in peadars last week he's looking for a new plant to build Teslas. Donzo brought him over on a fact finding trip hoping he'll get a few votes out of it. Seagate are selling up and anyone who used to work in Essex are being retained.

Id--ts posting that is somewhat a union's fault. There is no union in stst,so how can they be to blame.

Would be more believable if you had of mentioned invest N.I. who actually fund the springtown site with investment not some Mickey mouse outfit like enterprise N.I. STST has posted profits of avg £13m per year for the last six years. Why would you close a profitable business that is heavily subsidised by the tax payer. Any other sites subsidised to the extent of springtown.

The mount of time I spent in that managers office sucking di-k and being a tout.... Those weasels didn't tell me anything. I suppose I'll be rewarded at least by being kept to the end. We need to get the union in now more than ever! Uppa union.

Is that the same Enterprise NI that are on the former Seagate Limavady site? That have zero involvement with multinationals and "lobbies on behalf of self-employed, micro, and small businesses." Some comedians out there spouting nonsense.

Look over the last few years and ask yourself these questions:

  1. What has STST R&D delivered for business so far?
  2. Why hasnt the HAMR drive been launched with Solas so far?
  3. Why hasnt Solas been in a repeatable and acceptable manner - to start with?

Then look into the current financial crunch and the tight grip around expendtiures..why would a business keep this site running? the answers are all pointing to this news - and I beleve it is not a rumour, it all makes a credible sense.

With rumours like this and no facts or information to back it up unsettles the workforce even more. Just wondering who/what benefits from unrest in the workforce. Who would start a rumour like this and further already worried families. I'll wait for facts. Most people are.

This is the reason it's been taking so long for them to make an announcement. And this is the reason we are still flat out running wafers, even though they say there are no orders. Mass exodus to Abbotts. It will be a sad day, but we will on to a new chapter. Good luck everyone.

If this is to be no more than just idle speculation can someone categorically deny that this is not the case? If it isn’t a rumour i’d assume there’ll be no denials posted by those really in the know to settle employees’ fraying nerves.

@ eyb+1mFwHBHM this is happening. just wait and watch. I think it makes perfect sense, they are not clsing the biggest head manufacturer, theya re just optimisng the HAMR delivery. what has the springtown done so far in getting to a reproducible HAMR head? ZERO. how can you do so in the first place unless you pin down a root cause? hit and trial has been the approach here, so no wonder at all. this is very well happening and the announcement on May 22nd will lay all rumours to rest.

not surprised to hear this and can perfectly anticipate this....given the sad state of management and mindless decisions ....so much for the "explosive growth".....the way the org decisions were made it was clear this day was comning. feel really sorry for all families impacted.
