Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Buddy at ExxonMobil told me that we should expect a bunch of ENGINE expats to start showing up in the USA. That is what is happening at ExxonMobil told these days from Midland to Houston. Apparently their jobs are being offshored and also simultaneously the ones that can’t be moved to India are being filled by Indian expats in the USA. Shocking!

wrong. when automation kicks in and as shipping costs and risks continue to climb, it will be reshoring that is cheaper than offshoring to do and we are already into that era. the resulting goods will also be cheaper for the same reasons

maybe you haven’t noticed the fuel costs, the straight or hormuz, the absolute state of shipping post covid, or tariffs. if labor is heavily automated, the shipping becomes the main cost to optimize for the and the result is obvious

@yn The scenario you outlined works as long as you are willing to pay substantially more for everything. Manufacturing jobs on a vast scale are not coming back - ever - due to both automation in domestic factories and lower production costs overseas. Technical office based jobs can, and already are, done across the globe - there nothing unique about the US and many countries - China and India for example- are minting technical graduates from universities at far greater numbers than the US can possibly match.

id rather not live in a world where america is the only country where you are expected to compete with the entire planet for the same jobs

there is nowhere else where this is normalized. every other country values keeping its labor in its own borders and has laws in place to ensure that happens, including india. this is basic stuff.

the usual response to this data is to cry about how about how that’s socialism or anti free market or something like that. it’s actually much better for the economy in the long run for jobs to grow and proposed domestically than for companies to pop up on the occasional quarter for outsourcing and this should be quite obvious to anyone thinking in terms of generations.

in my view, people aren’t allowed to complain about the rust belt if they support outsourcing because “it’s good for the bottom line” since they are supporting the next rust belt unfolding in real time.

yep. americans are losing their own companies because indians only hire indians. not only that. they only hire indians that speak their native non-hindi language or match their caste or their skin tone or are related. they are extremely racist even with each other.

and nobody is even discussing these facts. it’s such a joke that we have such a double standard an would rather just give away our entire industries than be called names for defending our livelihoods.

the ultimate proof that americans are the least racist people on earth is that we’d rather suffer than even be accused and no citizen of any other country even cares about such things

@m0 doesn’t impact CVX because we’re shipping jobs overseas. I’d rather have the H1B’s. more of an impact to American workers when you’re shipping jobs overseas. Those jobs are not coming back.

CVX is making money hand over fist with the rise in energy costs and moving "Engines" to the USA on L-1 visas is 1) a cross training opportunity 2) spending money from the expense budget to reduce profits in a windfall year.
I am working working with people from the Engine who are located in India and the cross training has been remarkably slow to take hold. Much worse than a traditional new hire in the USA.

It’s about costs. Management hopes the engine thing works but if it doesn’t…who cares? We turned over a sizable portion of our workforce. Reset those salaries lower, rebalance the tranches for health care premiums, and reset those pension clocks. If you want to be a successful upper level manager just remember you have to recast your thinking: heads I and my cronies win, tails you and your kind lose.

Bringing someone as an expat to the US, even if their local salarie is lower than a US counterpart, will be more costly to the company once you factor all the expat benefits. If the company does is either for development or because truly they cant find a local US with same skills. It will not be a cost reduction strategy.

It's time to do away with these visas.

They can't justify being unable to find an American to do the job in America.

Can we class action this? No one is holding these corporations accountable. It's not like the US government is even checking.

It's time to read up on the L-1 visa, folks. It allows workers from foreign offices to relocate to the US for years at a time, with their families, and without a salary requirement or well-defined skill requirement. The government approves 97% of them. It's arguably worse than H-1B.

That only makes sense if the said buddy is cruising on a high PSG. Works as a short term measure; salaries have to largely match their US counterparts, or they’d be living under a highway underpass. defeats the purpose of ENGINE.
