Thread regarding Gainwell Technologies layoffs

Workforce Reduction going on today

After years of showing up and doing my job, I ended up on the wrong side of a workforce reduction.

I keep replaying it in my head and I still don’t understand why it was me. I wasn’t the one on the team copying and pasting content from free tech newsletters and calling it “training strategy.” I wasn’t the one disappearing into medical leave for half the year. I was the one quietly carrying my load, triple‑checking my work and trying to be a decent teammate.

So when they said my role was being eliminated, it hit me like a truck. My first reaction was: why me and not them? What did I do wrong? Was I too quiet? Too direct? Not political enough? Not fake enough? It’s hard not to internalize it and feel like I must have missed some secret rulebook everyone else was reading from.

On top of that, I’m wrestling with the feeling that some of my coworkers were not just unhelpful, but actively backstabbing. People who smiled in my face, pretended to be friends and then somehow managed to come out untouched while I was the one cut. It makes me question my own judgment about who to trust and whether being straightforward and honest actually works in corporate environments that reward fake over effort.

Right now my confidence is pretty shaken. I feel unsure of myself and my choices, and I am angry that people who contributed far less are still there.

I’m sharing this here because I know I can’t be the only one who feels blindsided, replaced, and somehow made to feel like the problem when they did everything “right.” I’m trying to sit with the confusion and the grief without sugarcoating it, and also remind myself that being ethical, reliable, and real is not a weakness even if it didn’t protect my job.

If you’ve ever wondered “Why me?” while watching less‑committed people keep their seats, you’re not alone. I’m still figuring out what’s next, but for now I just needed to say this out loud, without pretending it’s all “bittersweet” and “for the best” when it mostly just hurts!

@s8 I could not agree more. All employees should be thinking this way. If I get let go that’s great. But I’m not waiting around for that. I’m leaving. I am in the final stages of landing a new gig. I encourage every single employee to do the same. Get out now. Do it on your terms.

It has been 12 months since I was WFR’d from Gainwell. It was the best thing that ever happened. Yes, it hurt. Yes, it shook my confidence. Yes, it was scary. However, once all of that settles and you find your next role - you’ll be thanking your lucky stars for it.

Sounds to me like they are clueless and made a really bad decision.

I'm no longer worried about WFR. I'm actually hoping it'll happen to me. The severance pay will essentially pay me to spend my daytime hours looking for another job.

I pray every day to be WFRd. I’ve asked my boss to choose me.

Gainwell's job is to rip off the tax payers!

I'm sorry this happened to you. But trust and believe you're going to be better off in the long run. The manager who voted to WFR you, was obviously blinded by influences outside of reality. I saw this constantly, there was a group on each account that was Teflon. The "yes" men and women who BS'ed every manager up the chain up to the boss. At some point they hopefully realize, to their regret, they've let all the competent people go and kept the empty suits. Meanwhile, you have gone on to bigger and better things!

@a7 Your post is 100% spot on.

"Gainwell rewards "results" ... not correct results. The managers want to check things off. Doesn't need to be correct they'll deal with the defects later."

It is seemingly all about delivering against an arbitrary internal deadline that they have set.

@ap+1 is also 100% correct --- TRUST NO ONE when it comes to the work environment. Everyone is hyper focused on keeping their own job that it has become cutthroat. there is no loyal between company and employee, direct leadership and employee or often employee to employee.

@OP My heart goes out to you. Most companies would be blessed to have you! Triple checking your work, have you ever thought of Quality Assurance - lol!

Don't let Gainwell make you doubt yourself and your talents. There is seemingly no rhyme or reason behind some of their decisions. Sending best wishes for a bright, successful and less stressful future. Hoping tjat someday soon, Gainwell will just be a glance in your rearview mirror.

Update this thread once you land on your feet. I would love to hear a success story 00 franjky we all could use one!

It helps if you’re an I too. If it comes down to between you 🇺🇸 and an I, you’re gone!

I feel you. I had more knowledge in my little pinkie than the people still there - combined! Think of it like this, there’s a reason the company is in big trouble.

Try viewing it as they did you a favor, instead of wallowing in "why me" hand wringing.

You will never know the real reasons for their decision to let you go, and if it's happened in a situation which was rife with backstabbing and fakeness, who really cares what such people's "reasons" are? Be glad that they're now in your rear view.

They have no integrity, and you don't fit in where there's no integrity, so that's a good thing. You're a good person. Keep being good, but now you're more savvy.

Take being laid off as not only them doing you a favor by releasing you from toxicity, but also be grateful that you've learned the lesson to TRUST NO ONE when it comes to business. Coworkers, bosses, etc. are not your friends.

Good luck with finding something else soon!

If it's any consolation, my opinion is that management is clueless. Living in a bubble of meaningless tracking statistics that give them the illusion of control but bear little resemblance to the work that needs to be done. True to some extent in all companies, but the current CEO's culture seems to be an almost pathological instance.

Honestly if you were triple checking your work you were probably too damn slow.

Gainwell rewards "results" ... not correct results. The managers want to check things off. Doesn't need to be correct they'll deal with the defects later.

Try to find a new position where high quality work is a necessity.
