Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Unsolicited Advice...To Elevance Health

If this company truly wants to grow its market, it must take a hard look at the people directors leading its teams. These leaders have a direct and measurable impact on team performance. Ignoring this level of leadership has not produced meaningful gains so far, and it will not do so in the future. You have leaders that do not show up for work or for their teams. Why would any company pay leaders not to show up? It would serve the company well to undertake the necessary, perhaps uncomfortable, work to address this now, unless the intention is to continue falling short with full awareness of the cause.

And to be clear, this post is not intended to solicit responses from people directors who may feel personally offended by this perspective. The focus should remain on results, accountability, and the long-term success of the organization, not on individual sensitivities.

@OPIt’s wild...people directors who never used to come to work are suddenly showing up because there’s new leadership. You really can’t make this stuff up.

@rh - We need more Staff VPs who report to other Staff VPs, to really showcase our business acumen.

Who told you that we are trying to grow the market?

@w0 because Elevance is run by greedy people who care more about the bottom line than having people who know how to do the job. Not every person who is a senior is that great though. The point is there are teams throughout the org where E13 and E14 are doing the exact same job. I don’t think it is fair that those people get unlimited pto when E13 or even E12 have to pick up the slack for an E14 who has unlimited PTO and is constantly gone. One of the E14 just took another 2 weeks off and I got to cover for this person now. The year has barely even started. How many more weeks are they gonna take?

@rx and they Rif'd people at that Sr. level that had decades of experience and hired new people that have no clue for anything. Make it make sense.

@ra first of all people leader is a misnomer from what I can see. More like "people bleeder." Meetings? Big deal. Any work required they dump on their reports. And you can get around the in office requirement. It doesn't take much to get an "exception" in this place. and if you are going in, how long are you there? So it's dialing into Teams and then dumping your responsibilities on your "people". i have yet to see a director do anything of consequence. they are a huge waste of company money.

@rr what about all E14 getting unlimited PTO when mixed with teams who are also E13 and E12’s. Now I feel like I’m picking up the slack for people who basically do the same job as me just one level higher. Some are new hires and haven’t even been with the company for 2 months. Another one been with the company for a while but is constantly gone and constantly makes mistakes with work she does do. Yet she’s a “senior”.

The ridiculous "unlimited PTO" directors have is a big part of the problem. You are literally asking for trouble expecting people to be mature enough to police themselves. Ain't happening. Give most of these directors an inch and they'll take 100 miles. I know that if I took a day off every time I had a headache or personal problem to attend to I'd never be at work either. It's pretty much like robbing your employer. You are getting paid to do your job not manage your own life. Everyone has personal issues to attend to. Why do directors get a pass? They don't do anything anyway but chirp up at a town hall every once in a while. What would happen if everyone else had unlimited PTO as well? The whole place would shut down. You would think as uptight and old school Gail is to insist on "in office" days, she'd would NOT be granting unlimited PTO to directors who can barely function while they are "working."

@ra I don’t know. I expect my manager to keep one on ones with me and not blow me off without any explanation. I expect them to act like a manager and manage. I expect them to act with a higher standard because they are managers but instead deal with manager pettiness and insecurity.

@ra You mean fake busy? How many people leaders does it take to sc--w in a lightbulb? I’ve seen so many email strings where leaders are trying to pass the buck on to someone else.

Do you have any idea how busy people leaders are? Non stop meetings and calls. What are you expecting them to do that you aren’t getting? Also, the constant commuting to offices while most of their staff is at home. It sounds like the issue might not be your leader.

Directors are a joke, only few are worth it. They should layoff more directors, be it individual or manager level.

If this company wanted advice they would actually listen to their associates - they don't - the only opinions that matter are Directors and above- who could care less as long as they get to keep their jobs and the ability to remain completely apathetic about anyone but themselves.

There are several people directors who have no leadership or management skills in IT. Some of them have their friends as direct reports. And several work as professors or lecturers in universities. Guess what they will be doing while collecting paychecks from Elevance!

They don’t care. They continue to move half the company offshore; as long as statistics can be manipulated, they’ll preach cost and quality while both are far worse than the year before. And their failure will show up as more offshoring. The leaders are toxic and it all rolls downhill.

I know so many people with Director titles that are completely useless in this company, it is ridiculous..... Many of them do nothing but protect those above them.
