‘Drip drip’ process sees 400 jobs axed from Allstate
Whistle-blower claims US-owned firm ‘has gone from a place filled with inspirational leaders to a structure that is clueless’

Fears are growing of a further “drip drip” tranche of jobs losses at US-owned technology giant Allstate as its Northern Ireland workforce slumps to its lowest level since 2012.

It comes as a former senior team leader at Allstate’s Belfast operation contacted the Irish News claiming the company is “terminating workers’ contracts at a rate just below the mandatory reporting number”.

He says a large percentage of those being targeted are long-term employees with 15-plus years’ tenure, which is stripping a valuable skill set from the company and has currently left morale within Allstate “at an all-time low”.

And the man - who says he left his role in Belfast of his own volition at the end of 2023 after more than 12 years, having being “impacted with mental health issues following the firing of my leader” - has lifted the lid on a number of other issues at the company, which also has a base in Derry.

This includes Allstate forcing some employees to sign a non-disclosure order (NDA) and “resign by mutual consent”, otherwise any proposed leaving package is taken off the table, with the threat that the employee will be subsequently released on just statutory redundancy terms.

He told the Irish News: “Allstate has gone from being a phenomenal place to work, filled with inspirational leaders, to a structure which I would term as clueless.

“I felt obliged to whistle-blow because I care so deeply about my former colleagues, who I see today as being mentally abused.

“We knew something like this was in the offing more than two years ago when Allstate Corporation went headlong into a major restructuring of its operations, including redundancies across all its global divisions in the US, India and Northern Ireland. But they never put a number on it.

“Right now there is a culture of fear among employees, particularly those who’ve been with the company a long time. The leaver numbers just keep growing.”

Under company law in Northern Ireland, businesses need only inform the Department of the Economy if it is making 20 or more employees redundant within any 90-day period at a single establishment.

In 2022 overall staff numbers at Allstate NI fell by 80, and in 2023 there was a further reduction of 73, according to Companies House.

Figures for 2024 have not yet been reported, but sources within Allstate indicate that another 80-plus were axed.

Since launching in Northern Ireland in 1999, the workforce at the company - which is part of Illinois-headquartered insurer Allstate Corporation - grew rapidly, and broke through the 2,000 barrier in 2012, peaking at 2,302 in 2019.

But since then, numbers have been on a continuously downwards trajectory and are currently understood to be around the 1,900 mark, which would mean 400-plus staff have departed in just over five years.

Allstate - which currently occupies just three of the six floors at its Belfast headquarters building at Mays Meadow - told the Irish News it adhered to all local laws and regulations, including reporting when employees are impacted by business changes.

A spokesman added: “We’re continually transforming how we work to provide customers the best experience.

“When employees are affected by these changes, we help them find new opportunities at Allstate or provide job placement support with an optional separation package that exceeds required levels.”

Two weeks ago, Allstate Corporation reported that full-year consolidated revenues in 2024 reached $64.11 billion (almost £51 billion), up 12.3% from $57.09 billion (£45.3bn) in 2023.

They did the same thing in 2011 - laid off exactly 19. One of my team members was laid off and even our manager was only told about it about an hour before it happened. It has always been an HR-driven company - quite often they'd just put you in any random billable role and pay no attention to your skillset. One of the senior managers(not the only one) even stated that there was no need to train people or pay for expensive courses as they might then leave.

It makes sense to shut down ANI, keep India and add more nearshore resources

@1bw+1jmc2m7by ... I doubt that you're one of my direct reports, but my team have all asked me exactly this & the honest truth is that I don't know who's jobs are on the line - including my own!

@1eh+1jmc2m7by. like how ANI's leadership keeps it professional right? Layoff 19 at a time so delicate fragile Stephen doesn't have to go on the TV and explain himself? Very professional, and folk wonder why morale is rock bottom.

Please keep this professional. There’s no need for this. You don’t know the detail so don’t speculate and accuse.

Your manager probably has no idea and is wondering about their own job. Stephen McKeown probably doesn’t know either.

Does anyone want to hear a mad one?

Our team were talking with a manager on this today and the topic of silent redundancies came up. One person asked, do we know if our jobs are safe. Not only did this person get a complete non-answer, but they were told that this isn't a topic that would be discussed!

Voluntary resignations do not count towards the mandatory reporting number so the company doesn’t have to follow ‘collective consultation’ rules, which only come into force if making 20 or more employees redundant within any 90-day period at a single establishment.

Have a look further down this chain and you will see someone else saying the same things - ‘You could never get the job you applied for…’

How a person be good at a role if that person can’t get it - which is what I and the other poster said.

Hope this helps 👍

'this company values money and the stockholders more than the customers and the employees.'

I mean...does this not apply to 90% of comps, especially in this industry? Would love to hear of a comp not like this. Greenpeace...Trocaire...Samaritans... before anyone says it, I know these are charities

The only reason Big Blue went to Ireland in the first place was because you were cheap labor. You ain’t as cheap as you used to be and resources are cheaper in India, so time to say goodbye. Big Blue doesn’t care about. The care they show is only what is legally required to make them look good. Nothing more. You have served a purpose and you are being disposed of. Sadly, this company values money and the stockholders more than the customers and the employees. There is so much fraud waste and abuse here that if the grunts knew just how much there is they would have to go to a forest and scream to let out their frustrations. Y’all should have been paid double what you made. Yes double. You’ve been ripped a new one by Big Blue. I wish they would get exposed for the sl--e that they are.

@r4+1jmc2m7by I’ve got to ask, were you any good at those roles that were supposedly beneath you?

The reason I ask is because you’re clearly not even capable of reading correctly. The correction you are making in such an ignorant manner referred to contract employees and had nothing to do with people working roles that weren’t what they applied for. That was the comment below, it’s not the same poster but I suppose the last few digits did match so it was good enough for you.

Just to be clear, the roles being terminated have primarily been full time roles and not contract employees. The numbers of terminations are also higher than what can be determined from the reporting to companies house as it does not take into account the graduate intake which remains high. Graduates are more malleable and are ultimately cheaper labour so they continue to fit into the model.

@kb+1jmc2m7by Actually he’s right and it’s YOU who couldn’t be more wrong. I have a computer science degree and for about 14 of my close to 20 years with this company, I was forced into roles that could’ve been done by a school leaver. HR were clueless and filled vacant roles with the next person on the list, NOT the best suited person!

Agree with the majority of the article, except, “Allstate has gone from being a phenomenal place to work, filled with inspirational leaders …” . Never found it to be an “phenomenal” place to work. The company was run with an iron grip by HR for a large part of its existence. JH to his credit turned it around.
Now seems like a company with a caretaker MD and an uncertain future.

Sounds like they are terminating contract employees not regular employees. Should be no surprise.

You could never get the job that was advertised there it almost destroyed my career as I was applying for programming jobs and they'd just put you into some completely unrelated role and keep promising you'd get your role eventually it never happened.... You were just an expendable number

Really? Can we give the customers 30 seconds for rebuttal? Guess that's why people, including long time customers, are dropping Allstate for better service and converage, huh?

The continually transforming part is at least true. They've been "transforming" the entire 10 years I've been here. And they keep failing at it because the same group of bonus hungry a-s kissers in middle management make sure the big boys never see the real picture of what's going ont.

Kudos to the whistle blower.

"When employees are affected by these changes, we help them find new opportunities at Allstate..."

That's a lie for a start. When it happened to me a few years ago, I was left to hunt out opportunities on my own. The HR and TA departments barely acknowledged my existence. I hope everyone still working at ANI is looking after themselves. The writing is on the wall, I feel.

Well done to that person who has blown the lid off what is actually happening at ANI.

What's been happening at the company over the last few years if nothing short of scandalous.
