Sc--w this company. I didn't get RIF'd (this time), but I'm a manager and this is the 2nd time I've had to RIF good people this year. They give us a script and tell us "don't say you're sorry, don't show remorse" and "own the decision". But it isn't our decision. We are given a spreadsheet where we enter information about each person on our team and rank their performance and values, but the ultimate decision is not ours. We are told who to RIF, when, and exactly what to say.
Elevance makes me destroy people's lives and sound heartless doing it. They want me to take responsibility and be the bad guy, but it is THEM. People, just know that your managers are just as much a victim as you are. I can hardly wait until it's my turn to be RIF'd. I used to love this company but now I hate every single minute spent working here.
I hope you read this, Gail. Congratulations on turning this company to a big pile of sh-t. None of you care about people at all. You care about lining your own pockets.

Here's the issue. All of you placing it on Gail. The shareholders and board who ultimately run the company see that she raised the stock price from 300 up to 550. To THEM, this is a phenomenonal job. Exactly why they hired her. Now, that stock price increase came at the expense and continues to come at the expense of its own workforce. To US, this is a bad job. A destruction of the company. To us. And unfortunately, us isn't going to change that tide overnight. We're a couple years out from all the offshoring ruining our provider and member experience. Then. Then, we'll have to rally and rebuild the empire from scratch. Maybe we'll disperse and become small enough to be acquired by united in pieces.
Thanks for sharing, OP. You sound like a great people leader with a ton of heart. Take care of yourself.
Who dumped 17 million in stock?
Sure miss Mr. Swedish and his leadership. The best this company has had! He was an advocate for members and associates and humankind!
Where's Joe when you need him ?
Yes, what people don't realize is they look for associate demographics and job titles to make those decisions. It's not even about performance. It is the almighty dollar, your demographics, location and title. Then some random person makes the final decision
Last year I was part of the csbd team. During my vacation my boss, kept checking my LinkedIn. I didn’t understand why and the day I get back I had a 1*1 and got rifted. I could tell my manager was upset but couldn’t show it.
I later took a demotion for Carelon and again took a vacation and 3 days after I get back, same thing.
This company does not want you to take any vacations I guess or it’s just dejavu for me.
They let go a few people I know. It su-ks that you are on pins and needles when you go to work not knowing if you are next. Every since Gail got there this company has went from sugar to sh-t. The name change su-ks. I loved working for AIM but with this change they took so many things that made it fun to work for that company.
Thank you for sharing! Karma will come for Gail and those who have no empathy in their empty souls.
Can you tell us more about the spreadsheet? So you fill out more than just a ranking of job performance?
Not even allowed to say I'm sorry or show emotions??? Fu-k that! I would have SO much more respect for my sup if they expressed human empathy in this process.
This is not how it works.
Sorry to hear all this. For those RIFd, it will get better. I started there in 2016 and it was great. Great team - but yes, stress, but good people and work life balance. Then… Gail. Then.. the CMO Bill and it all went to sh-t. Losing the equity in the Anthem name was the most asinine move. How much money was wasted on that rebrand?
Well, at the end of the day there is life after Anthem. I’ve been out a couple of years now and no longer have the anxiety.
To OP when you ranked your team, you knew who would get cut, based on you ranking of each team member. It was your decesion.!
With congress laughing all the way to their personal banks. No one is coming to save us.
I'm so sorry you were hit today. I hope better things are ahead for you!
Don't forget she dumped 17 million in stock a week before this bullsh-t went down.
Thanks for posting this. It's exactly how most if not all people leaders feel about this sh-t.
@OP we old timers know. It often comes down to hitting a $$$ target when they select who they are putting in a RIF. I’ve helped fill out the forms, I know that the ranking system is just paperwork, and the real decision is a finance one.
THANK YOU for coming on here and sharing this information! We all need to see this. You know this is not your fault and I am so sorry you’ve been forced to be so emotionless. I am so sorry for the pain you’ve had to inflict and then absorb. This company… I too remember when it was a good place to work. I took pride in being a part of it. I too can say that Gail was the catalyst for change. It been like watching pure evil take over.
