Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Got a coffee chat invite from my manager and was blindsided by security and HR

My boss set up a casual coffee chat to catch up in one of the corner meeting rooms. Halfway through the conversation HR and security walks in and I’m told I’m being let go.

WTF is this cowardice move, at least have the decency to lay people off in a respectful manner

@pd I was let go in 2021 at the tail end of covid, I actually did this when they mentioned layoffs. I went through a rough period with a terrible supervisor that ranked half his people 5, before being removed for harassment and blatant open racism in our department. Knowing had that scar even being liked and ranked high in subsequent years, I know I was just a number and I prepped all my files and projects for a friend of mine to take over. Packed all my belongings because I didn’t want my friends to have to go through that, and when the time came I stunned my lead with having my work already packaged to hand over and was able to get a really good reference by being incredibly professional.

Everyone left at IOL should pack up their sh-t now. This could happen to anyone at any time. Best be ready to just walk away and not trouble your colleges with cleaning out your desk.

Wow. That is brutal!
I can't believe how bad it has gotten there. I worked there about 5 year ago. I was a contractor. They ran out of work and I had no hard feelings although it seemed they didn't treat their people very well..... That was an understatement.

For those remaining, try to get out if you can. It sound toxic there and you probably might save someone else from being let go.

@OP The minute you complete the survey and indicate you’re not mobile, you will be out the door so fast. Only thing this company knows is to dole out humiliation, so forget getting any respect during layoffs.

To the OP:
Did you complete the mobility survey and indicate you’re not mobile?

@dk Your right. Other companies out there also require work laptop to be returned before layoff.

There is a hint, if he asks you to bring the laptop.
That is how someone i knew was laid off during covid layoffs.

Same thing happened to me. What do you need to leave right now, the rest will be shipped to you.

You must not be a very good performer. Darren doesn’t need you any more, and he knows what is best for your career

This has always been their style; spring the element of surprise and humiliation. Prior to the Covid lock down, one employee was called in for a "debriefing meeting" after the conclusion of a successful quarter-end reporting cycle. She thought it was for the customary recognition award that finance employees were generally given after the end of a quarter or year-end. They were suddenly joined by HR and security. They even got her badge out of her handbag and escorted her out of the building. The employee was in a state of depression for several months.

Agreed with OP. HR should have been in cc instead of bcc
