Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

What happens during your 15 minute layoff meeting?

I have not received one. I am just curious.

I know they read from a script and they don't deviate, do they bother to say at the end "Any questions?"

I'm assuming not, and if not do they give you an opportunity to say anything before they end the call? Even if you realize that they probably cannot respond to it.

@p8 exactly same thing happened with me. my manager acted surprised but he knew he put me on a list to be possibly laid off months before. I found out my Director knew I was being laid off 3 months prior. my manager found out the day before and did exactly this

I went through it twice (both times my entire dept was wiped out). I had a pretty good clue the first time, but it was still a surprise. I showed up to work and immediately got a call from HR. Went into a conf room and HR, along with my Dir (on video), laid me off. I said nothing.....just "ok" and walked out. I had 3 internal jobs within a week (this was the early 2000s, when Cisco still tried to re-employ you). Second time I also knew it was coming....was warned months in advance. I just told my boss (a Dir): "just read the script". He did, and we talked later "off the record", although he was still towing the line and not revealing much. It su-ked that time, because I moved from another dept to support that Dir, and then got axed with the rest of the dept. Sc--w Cisco.

Send your AI agent to the meeting, and ask it to send you an email summary.

In my case they laid off a whole bunch of teams at the same time in our building. Big conference rooms were used for the 15 minute speech and the rest was split into smaller conference rooms based on your name to get the physical package of paperwork. People asked questions just after the speech and the only answer was management couldn't say anything that wasn't in the speech. HR handing out the paperwork loudly questioned why people weren't all happy about being laid off.

They hand you a teddy bear and add your mommy and therapist to the Webex, then tell you that you’re no longer needed, leaving you to clutch the teddy and cry to mommy

Mine was during my weekly (rescheduled) 30-min 1:1 with my manager. There was no layoff announcement, so I was blindsided. I joined and she just said she had something to tell me and immediately went into the script. We cried, I asked questions, she just said everything will be in the packet that would be emailed shortly. No one else joined. That was it.

During 15 minutes layoff meeting, there were my direct manager and her manager. I was saying nothing, showing no emotions. My direct manager asked me if I was listening. I answered yes, but I decided to stay calm. No emotions, no protest, no talks.... is sometimes the best we-pon to destabilize managers. They asked me if I wanted to add something, I just said : ok, it is noted, have a beautiful day.

I was already looking for another position, I got offers, both internally and externally. I took the severance, worked externally, and later I still receive proposals to come back.

So, don t care about the 15 minutes bullsh-t meeting.
Care about your network, your branding, your health, yours skills, yourself,

At least they let u stay in the system and use the laptop for 60 days. My manger was let go the same day. So his manager had to let me go. Both of us got rehired. And it still su-ked.

Frankly email notification is just easier these days. I mean, what is there to talk about? Nothing. Just notify me and let me move on.

My direct manager started to cry while telling me that my position has been affected by the layoff - her manager instead, a di-khead, joined the meeting and, read the script and went back to work.

@bk Shouldn't that 19 be bumped up to like 26 now? :)

I entertained myself and saw manager's frustration by asking him to read the script FOUR times. He was probably nervous and not very clear, so I kept asking to start over from beginning. I knew the drill and wanted to extend as there was nothing in agenda beside reading and ending call. Think something creative and have fun. Nothing can be changed.

They read from a script quickly. No questions. Will follow-up with the agreement package in email, which you must sign in order to get what they're offering & agree not to sue the company for age discrimination. The agreement will list the age groups & job titles of those who were LR'd (at least it did when I was impacted in September 2019.)

In mine I showed my manager the mid finger. This was 19 years ago.

Let them know that you know about the shady things that Cisco has been doing and you can expose them.

That can either get you:

  1. Job security
  2. A huge severance

Ask me how I know.

If they try to make small talk at the beginning of the call, be sure to bring up the failing health of a close relative or pet. Or maybe about how your car was totalled over the weekend. Anything to make them feel a little sh---y for letting you go.

If you ask questions they’ll point you to the information they’ll send you and the share point.

Don’t bother. Just tell your manager to read the script so they can get on with their day. Go in unfeeling, respond unfeeling. Cry and rage when you hang up.

I’ve sat on both sides of the table in a LR. Neither are good so just move on. It su-ks either way.
