Shared Services

Rumors on shared services? I’ve heard talk that Finance, IT, and HR are going to be absorbed into the respective BUs they do the work for and will be required to relocate to those home offices like Alaska Midland etc. anyone else here this?

People aren't asking the right questions/comprehending nformation given. You can reorg and report to a boss in a different physical location in a world where we've proven we can work remotely. They've been hinting around the reorg all along. Not a big deal/huge shocker if you ask me. My question is specific to the Bartlesville office peiple keep asking about. To me if they decided to close that down they would need to relocate some employees. I see someone has asked that here but the CEP emails and FAQ haven't addressed the Bartlesville question at all.

To the fella that got downvoted into oblivion above (personnel will not be moving)

Turns out you’re 100 percent correct. You get two very shiny stars for your input.. well done.

I’d love for someone to articulate which groups/services located in Bartlesville would NOT be candidates for outsourcing or elimination altogether…. The reality is that moving those jobs offshore or nearshore is more cost effective. It’s shocking that IT (CDT specifically! just Google RR’s track record) next gen folks, etc. don’t see the writing on the wall. Yikes

40% reduction in personnel needed as a start. The answers are obvious. Look at past practices that generated profit at $14/bbl oil and $1/mcf gas. Root out corruption and waste. Implementing the solutions will be difficult and COP doesn’t have the strength to do what is needed. There will be companies that find their way and they will flourish.

The rumor doesn't even make sense.

  1. L48 is hq'd in Houston, so why relocate to Midland?
  2. Alaska already has their finance people in Anchorage. Why would they be relocated?

The only relocation discussions would be for Bartlesville, which isn't linked to any BU.
Plus anyone in the Houston office that is not already focused on L48.

IT layoffs have been very minimal over the last 20 plus years. Unfortunately our time has come and most of those high paying jobs are going overseas. Shared services for Finance is already bare bones in most cases and on purpose to make outsourcing easier for them.

@p6+1jq4v9tkp This is the most accurate post in the history of ‘thelayoff’ (other than the McDonalds breakfast guy of course). The IT folks get real upset when the ‘oil company’ gets in the way of their ‘IT Services’ company.

from @p4+1jq4v9tkp - well said!! You bring up great points. At the end of the day we do need to enable oil to get out of ground, that is how we generate revenue. As we see with what is going on in politics now, sometimes the bureaucracy gets too big and thinks the people work for them, not the other way around. Same goes for shared services it seems

To the 15-year veteran: You bring up a solid point, and I think you're on the right track. The real issue is that Shared Services often refuses to acknowledge that business units are different. In their push for standardization, they create layers of unnecessary red tape, making processes more cumbersome for everyone. The result? Support staff end up dictating how the business units should operate instead of enabling them. That’s why every Executive update seems to focus more on Next Gen initiatives and celebrating that we "closed the books" rather than highlighting successful drilling projects. At the end of the day, this company makes money by getting oil out of the ground—not by following procedures to the letter or rolling out the latest IT upgrade.

I have been here 15 years and the shared service model was the pinnacle of savings. OVer time, each BU build some sort of shadow group, whether that be IT, finance, HSE, etc which resulted in redundancy. In a perfect world, shared services works great. But each BU then tells those shared service folks that they don't understand their BU and why they are special. It seems that by letting each BU run their own affairs as if a seperate company led to the downfall of shared services.

Personnel would not be moving from where they are.

Just to give everyone an update. Currently from the an area of the meetings (not going say which one I am in) they are going through on cost cutting ways for materials and operations (personnel have not come up so far). There is talk of merging support functions largely back under all assets. Currently they are split except for direct help, equipment and assets. They run their own functions otherwise. Next Gen cost a lot of money and the new systems and all consultants (PWC, BC, etc) have cost even more. There have been issues producing and finding the data to sort through for cost with SAP just transferring over and there is about 3 people that only know the system but can’t code. Thats all I have so far.

They are weighing the model of how funding and money allocation and reporting for support functions will report. No one is moving though. Current all of those functions either report to a VP of an area or to their own President which hasn’t been the best.

You’re telling me people are supposed to move to North Dakota? It’s basically one massive man camp. I doubt anyone from Houston or Bartlesville will move there.
It makes Bartlesville look like a modern metropolitan city.

If you heard a rumor, then you are not connected to anyone who knows the facts.
It is a guess - just like predicting who will win the bracket. Might be right or might be wrong.
