Were there US RIFs in early February?

A friend was let go with a RIF and severance package, but I thought RIFs were normally larger scale. Can there be a RIF of 1-3 only?

Your friend should consider this a blessing and opportunity to go somewhere better. The new trend is assigning 15% bottom performers and firing them with no severance. See Microsoft. As soon as the job market favors the employer the knives come out big time don’t they? But if you quit without notice they will act shocked like you betrayed them. Figured this out soon and quiet quit.

Yes. RIFs can be large or small. I think if it is over a specific count if requires a public notification as a result of WARN act.
