I used to work in office but during covid it switched to WFH. My profile, timecard etc all say WFH. But I live 15 minutes from an office. I haven't got an email yet but it's insane since I've been WFH 100% for 5 years now. I really hope I don't get that email. I hate in office culture so much.

@q0 That bit about "left my laptop at work" doesn't quite check out, though, since they're not giving people actual office spaces.
It's called billionaire.
@ny you mean a multi - multi - multi - multi- millionaire
It’s great for the gas companies and mechanic shops. Also you can say “of course I wasn’t on that call I was driving in” until about 930 every morning and your remote only coworkers cannot say sh-t.
When you are away 2 hours during the day? “I was collaborating in office in a conference room and did not need a laptop.”
Email comes in at 6? “Well I leave work at 545 and I was told I cannot work at home, so I leave my laptop at work to comply.”
It is a monumental waste of time, energy, money, and gas. All to feed a millionaire's ego.
It’s not bad. No one I work with is in the office though. I have a few friends from previous teams that I get lunch with but zero work-collaboration and I’m getting less work done each day.
My thoughts?
It's a ridiculous waste of time. Counterproductive.
The actual motivation for it has nothing to do with collaboration and definitely nothing to do with productivity (almost all evidence contradicts that notion).
It's probably really motivated by an assortment of things like tax credits tied to real estate in certain markets (and so bodies are needed in seats), a PR kind of "look at us" thing, execs desperately trying to appear like they are trying something, veiled attempt to get some people to quit, and needing to do it for a handful of units where it makes sense and so just applying it across the board as a blanket policy.
@bv last gasps of a dying industry
@gw drink your coffee and head home after rush hour
Free coffee is nice until 9am. Since my manager wasn’t RTOed and non of myDRs are RTOed or on the other side of the planet I got say I have not seen the improved collaboration yet.
So far it is fine. Not having a dedicated spot or monitors at the cubes is annoying but you can also just sit somewhere else any day. Not stuck by the toilets or an annoying team mate.
Not looking forward to 20 miles on 494 in winter again though.
If you’re not near an office and were hired as a telecommuter, it’s doubtful you’ll be pulled into an office. Optum is not d-mb. These are head games to get people to quit. Same tactics being used at other companies such as Aetna, Blue Cross, Cigna and Humana. Do the best job you can do every day and worry about it when it happens!
