Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Get to work

To those complaining that all posts are tech, please get off this site and design some shoes that sell and some marketing campaigns that inspire and let us complain about tech leaders while we wait for you all to get us back on track. We’re not a tech company and it’s telling that tech has such a big presence. Still trying to find a must have shoe on swoosh. Thanks

@n5 I would define them as the business moving talent around “constantly”. Won’t say reorg/layoffs are used in a business failure sense anymore. At least not since ‘22.

Companies like Microsoft just released blow out earnings and still are laying off people. Even in our high stock price time (21-22) we were still laying off people.

How I see it, we now use the tool to get rid of people we don’t like rather than a tool of failure.

This is what makes working in the corporate world right now terrifying. Your job is always at risk even on the high times.

@cr layoffs are by definition a business failure. And more importantly is a way to obfuscate blame for that failure.

Yeah no... I'm from Tech but still refuse to join into a "let's bash the business in return" angle.

Lots of good friends on the business side.

Fear and doubt make these anti Team things start, don't fall into the trap. It's one Nike team.

@bw - I am from Tech and I agree tech is supposed to be an enabler not a business driver for a retailer that was definitely a misalignment of strategy, sad part is even after this re org in tech , there are people in tech that are asking business to provide proof that the tech features actually do not satisfy their needs, it should be the other way around tech KPIs should be aligned with business delivery kpis that we support and are supposed to scale

@bw Tech is only useful if you ever want to design, manufacture, ship, market or sell products. Otherwise it's a waist of money. Good news is that our products su-k so Tech is not useful.

We are in this situation because someone thought AF1s and Dunks were all anyone would ever want to buy, athlete be damned.

Tell me you don’t understand the business without telling me you don’t understand the business…

We are in this situation because we have a bloated, multi-billion dollar boat anchor in tech weighing our business down. The only way our tech offense moved product was through promotional discounts and push notifications. It hollowed out the health of the business.

Tech folks lamenting we aren’t a tech company need to point to how any of tech is monetizing anything in a healthy way. Swooshchat and Airmagination aren’t making us money. I’m sure they were fun projects. SAP is a decade plus (?) into throwing money down the drain?

What is the return on investment in tech for the increased resourcing and budget from the JD years? We can’t keep spending billions on an enabling function trying to pretend it’s some sort of shining example of being a “tech” company. He-l, other than the huge tech companies, there’s a lot of tech companies who don’t make money or simply monetize ads. That’s not our biz model.
