Thread regarding USAA layoffs

For my own sanity, I have to unplug from this site… for now.

I’ve been frequenting this site for months — reading, contemplating, and posting. Many of you have probably read some of my posts, including my Open Letter to the Board of Directors.

The last couple months have been really tough for me from a mental health perspective. I’ve spent a lot of time on sites like these, just refreshing and doom scrolling. Reading posts as they came in gave me some feeling of control, like knowing about something before it happened would somehow change the outcome.

I read every single post about the tragedy a few weeks ago. I read as people expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, I read as people expressed frustration and anger about how something like this could happen. and why something wasn’t done to prevent it. I also watched as people shared fake news articles, spread vitriol, and made the tragedy about themselves or used it as an opportunity to get on their own personal soapbox about something unrelated. It was shameful.

USAA isn’t the same company that it was 10, 5, or even 3 years ago. By no one’s estimation is the company better off today than it was before Wayne. Employee morale has been decimated and members are waking up to the fact that the company is resting on its laurels.

And yet, there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. Every single avenue to voice concerns is a dead end. Pulse champ, Pulse survey, The Post, Slack, manager, skip level, and even external sites like Reddit and TheLayoff all lead to nowhere. Nothing is going to stop Wayne, Amala, Tamla, and the rest of Wayne’s Weasels from turning USAA into a shell of its former self. Every official medium for expressing feedback is a checkbox to say “we listen to employees,” not to sincerely solicit feedback on how to improve.

The RTO date has come and gone. Most of us are back in the office now like good little boys and girls, just like Papa Wayne wanted. I for one don’t hate working in an office, but that doesn’t change the fact that the company violated its own Core Values to hire people as remote then unilaterally renege. It speaks to Wayne’s Machiavellian personality of manipulation and disregard for the well-being of the individual. His only interest is his own self-interest.

The only solution that I see is to ride out this wave to its inevitable end. There’s no amount of posting or reading on here that’s going to change anything.

Constantly reading “PIPs are being handed out like candy” won’t prevent someone from getting put on a PIP if they are targeted.

Hearing rumors about upcoming layoffs won’t prevent those layoffs from happening.

Hearing about benefit cuts won’t keep those benefits intact.

But they will make you angry, make you anxious, and steal your peace. And there’s not a job on this planet that’s worth that.

So, for now, I need to distance myself from this site. The plan is to do my work, avoid drama, save as much money as I can, and hope that I and everyone reading this can weather this storm until Wayne is gone.

If you find yourself dwelling on negativity, having trouble sleeping, having anxiety or panic attacks, I encourage you to do the same.

You could use your break to find a new job. If it is so bad go find something you like doing.

I think there is enough fear going around now that stating that something dark and sinister is going on in this situation, and to "watch out! USAA will get you", just might be what the company would like employees to believe.

This is unsubstantiated. And so easy to prove with a good lawyer.

So let's stop fear mongering.

I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere. Unless we share with each other. We gotta start makin' changes. Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers.

Anyone can check it for themselves. It's the system USAA uses to verify employment. You can't check on anyone unless you are an employer. But you can check your own information.

I am quite "sane", actually, by coming to this site. As another poster states, it is good to know that I am not alone. However, we are all still floating in the same boat.

I never read here unless I am psychologically prepared for what I will read and I think through what I will post. I pay very close attention to my mental health.

But I return here because I am not out to "save USAA". This USAA is a corrupt, vile, and filthy monster. It is the worst I have ever seen or experienced. So, pardon me if I do not want to save it.

I do, however, want justice for all of the abuse documented in these posts.

And any USAA employee who reads this and says, "Oh, they're just malcontents who deserve what they got", you are smoking something pretty powerful. There are enough comments here, with consistent stories, to reveal the true USAA.

And yes, you really could be next! That does not make me "feel" better saying that. It is just fact. At USAA, you are a number, a potential financial liability, and once morality was lost at USAA, all bets are off.

Yes, they told me why they fired me. Did you know you can check your own info at The Work number? That's all that's in there anyways is dates and title. They don't put ANYTHING about how or why you left at all!

Did they give you a reason why they fired you? because I was fired in May and they couldn't articulate an actual reason. No pip and crushed all of my reviews and QA scores. Not sure what these mo--ns are smoking. On the birght side I just consider it a "lay off" and that is what I told my new employer who had no issue as they just confirmed my title and dates via the work number.

I was fired end of June (after a successful 16 year career without a SINGLE PIP). I still come to this site cause it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone. It's sad to see the abuse that is happening within the walls but it helped me get over it WAY faster to know it wasn't just me. I will continue to come to this site to share my stories so others know they are not alone as well. Thank you for sharing yours!

You’ve mentioned all the internal avenues but how about external? Depending on what you know or want to say, you can discuss with reporters or regulators. Remember seeing an article quoting someone who got let go awhile go. They highlighted some bad behavior. Not sure it will make a difference but you never know.

You are spot on and have made some very valuable postings out here. I treat this site like the old internal EJS site: view it as entertainment, lots of BS and valuable insights. We pretty much have to venture out here since anyone asking any tough questions in an employee meeting, posting hard hitting observations on Slack or the lame Post can become a target. The execs have succeeded in chilling the employee atmosphere where they've become mostly silent. RTO is now a "love it or get the eff outta here if you don't like it here" topic. Congrats Payne, you've got your walking dead borg collective. Now you'll have to deal almost no one going above and beyond.

Well said. Frankly though, it’s just nice to have a place to share and read people’s opinions and responses without fear of reprisal or silencing of dissent. You’re right that nothing will come of it, though the open letter to the board might have been enough if Wayne was successfully hiding the truth from them. The only way to succeed is to replace the bad people on the board with members who can save the company. It will be hard to engineer that coup, and the vote isn’t until August 2024. By then… things will be effed

I'm in the same boat.
I've appreciated your well-written and well-thought-out posts here... and have followed your insights (at least, I think they were yours, you have a distinct voice in your writing) because reading your thoughts made me feel less alone in mine.

So for what it's worth, thanks for speaking up, and for trying. Take care of yourself. Use EAP for every issue. 10 sessions per issue means literally free counseling as long as we need it. Wayne su-ks? That's an issue. Workload tripled? Another issue. Anxiety over job loss? Already up to 30 sessions, and haven't even touched my personal life lol.

I'm pressing pause on this site to. Be excellent to each other. 💓

Definitely take a break. Mental health first. Just remember you don’t have to stay at USAA. There are other jobs. Many such as myself are moving on.
