Hiring people who are 17

So I always thought you had to be 18 to work at Sam's. We have a new associate who is 17. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against young people, however she cannot be on a register and of course cannot sell alcohol. Thoughts? Is this a new thing for Sam's/Walmart?

You don’t have to be 18, but then there are only certain jobs that they can perform. And if they are in school still there are guidelines to how many hours they can work during the school year. There are many guidelines to hiring under 18 and to avoid those clubs would just try not to hire minors.

We had a 16 almost 17 year old get hired that was hired by corporate, not the club. He started as carts then came inside and worked the register. He couldn't ring the alcohol purchases but he could ring everything else. We had to log in and do the alcohol transactions but other than that it was fine. So yes, we CAN hire minors, we just usually don't because of the limitations on what they can do and when/how long they can work each day. Also they have to have their lunch no later than the 4 hour mark. So it's really strict and we would have to give him lunch around the 3.5 hour mark just to make sure we never went over the 4. So they don't normally hire just cause it can be a pain in the a-s making sure you don't break any labor laws etc. It's more to make it easier that we don't, not that we cant. Hopefully it's a good kid and they will be a great associate for you. They will turn 18 soon enough. 😊

@lal+1bEI9CU7 I was not complaining. I was merely asking a question. So sick of the snarky come backs on this blog. So many as-----s on here.

if it were not against the law Walmart would hire 10 year olds and have them gather carts... it would be called the family employment plan... also the 10 year olds would be hired making more money than the 20 year associates

There are many other things a 17 year can do for example self check, merchandising and the list goes on just because she/he cannot sell alcohol does not mean they shouldn’t be given a chance or put in the lot! Stop complaining about the age of people and be grateful you are getting some help even if it means training them
