Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

I've made my peace with it

Which means I don't care about layoffs, reorgs, or anything else here. Paycheck until I'm gone, that's the extent of my commitment. Leadership clearly isn't invested in turning this around. So I expect nothing, and I care even less.

When you routinely remove perks (WFH, wellbeing week), limit promotions, and provide measly cost of living raises, don’t be surprised when you have unmotivated employees who don’t go above and beyond. Leadership talks about bringing back the “culture” but in reality they want cultists who will put up with anything

The only direction they point the company is “move faster”. I’m sorry but that’s not cutting it for strategy

@kt
I do my job. Then go home.
I do it well enough to be paid for it.
But extra isn’t happening any more. Used to.

Expecting a workforce to care, without providing any material and sustained patterns of behavior that would illicit intrinsic motivation… is the problem.

You my friend, have some leadership philosophy reading to do over the weekend.

Layoffs to continue until morale improves.

We’ve reviewed your recommendations for required Nike leadership coursework, and regret to inform you that we will not be moving forward with your suggestion at this time. Or ever.

It is critical for you to understand that leaders of today’s Nike needn’t be bothered with actually understanding sport.

You see, we are supremely focused on finding the very best of the leaders that aren’t good enough to make it in any other markets. Specifically, external talent that spent a great deal of time consulting, or doing anything where they were never held accountable.

That said, we do want to thank you for your suggestion. As it has inspired a new step in our process; where we will deliberately filter out applicants that know anything about sport. Because buzzwords are much more powerful in our current echo chamber than actual knowledge of our consumers.

Respectfully,

(For legal reasons, this is 1a protected satire)

@kp OP doesn’t have to do s h i t.

This is a publicly traded company with executive level management under federal investigation, navigating a class action, that keep hiring and promoting based in nepotism. They aren’t putting in any extra effort… why should anyone else?

The morale of an organization is a reflection of its leadership. If morale is such that everyone has a f u c k it mindset… leadership needs to do something about it.

If your base is entirely checked out, and simply going through the motions… that’s leaderships problem.

OP didn’t say that he or she isn’t going to do the job. Just that they aren’t caring anymore. You’re not paid to care. That’s extra. And comes with profound leadership.

Nike leadership couldn’t lead their way out of a pi-s soaked paper bag. Let alone transcend exceptional external and internal pressures.

They don’t care about you. And maybe worse, they don’t care about the brand. How many VP’s do you see wearing the swoosh? A bunch of has-been never-was couldn’t-cut-it anywhere-else hacks that had a mediocre resume… a f u c k i n thesaurus tongue… and an ivy connection wearing $300 leather shoes. None of which means they are able to create lasting intrinsic motivation within their organizations.

But I bet they sound super eloquent bull s h i t t i n g each other in the board room.

And F u c k e m. That’s why.

@OP So go tell your boss you are volunteering to be let go because you don’t care about Nike or your job. Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Sports 101 since new leaders know nothing about sports and it’s embarrassing to hear them fumble through what their favorite Nike shoe is and their favorite sport and why.

Also, I would add two things to the course:

  1. Mastering Fake Smile
  2. Coasting without being detected

You forgot the advanced class on Prioritizing meeting attendance, email and instant message replies. How to willfully ignore emails, slack messages and no show meetings you demanded were scheduled.

At some point you have to make your peace with it. Life is too short to live in fear. Truth be told they do us a disservice to announce layoffs in advance.

I would much rather not see it coming.

Sad thing is I was just starting to get some momentum after the last reorg.

@OP

Congratulations. You are now qualified to enter the Nike leadership development program. With your new found apathy, you are ready to take the following courses:

  • Surviving a Class Action for Beginners
  • Intro to nepotism
  • Remedial Non-Answers
  • Deck polishing for dummies
  • Email Forwarding; 101, 202, 303
  • Advanced Nepotism
  • Blame Deflection

When you’ve completed the above module we can get you started on your Irrational Decision Making group project.

If you’re worried about the time commitment, you needn’t worry; as your day as a Nike leader will no longer be filled with value.
