Nike is not a “tech” company or “product” company or “design” company.

Nike is a sweatshop built on the backs off cheap Asian and South American labor, marketed by so called athletes and Hollywood stars to the people who shouldn’t buy shoes that costs this much.

“Nike is not a tech company” – this is one of the d-mbest arguments to use when talking about how tech teams should evolve.

Here’s the thing: no company is a tech-only company; not even the biggest players in the game. Sure, we’ve got FAANGs with their cloud services like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure leading the charge, but that’s just one part of the machine.

Companies like Nvidia, ARM, and even IBM have their own specialized tech arms, but they all operate in different sectors. The core of these businesses isn’t strictly tech, it’s what they do with it.

Nike isn’t just about shoes; we’re about culture, performance, and innovation. The tech part of Nike? It’s about enhancing our products, experiences, and operations.

Saying “Nike isn’t a tech company” is like saying Apple’s not a design company just because they started making phones. That’s an old-school way of thinking. Tech is the backbone of every industry now. If you’re not evolving with it, you’re falling behind.

Every major company today is blending tech into its DNA, whether it's logistics, customer experience, or product development. You need tech teams that are as dynamic and forward-thinking as the business itself.

So stop pretending that “tech-only” is a thing; everyone is in the tech game now.

To be fair, Nike hasn't made good tech choices for over 10 years now. Ego fuels initiatives and like id--ts Nike builds in house or attempts to all the while falling further and further behind the innovation curve. Nike is not a tech company and engineering egos have ki-led productivity and success across tech for a decade at a minimum. I mean look at the AI debacle for one, its a freaking joke, the warehouse is a mess, and most products are worthless to the end users... until the engineering ego is put to and end, that coupled with poor executive leadership will continue to drive Nike further into the ground. It's not a one or two person issue, its a horrible culture war between factions that think they are running start ups.... laughable at best.

Are you serious? Our tech team is made up of 3 main types of talent: vendors converted to FTEs, long-term employees who transitioned from non-tech roles, or individuals with limited technical skills.

We're fortunate that JD made an effort to improve our tech capabilities by bringing in strong leadership, like MD, who, regardless of their technical depth, understands the potential of what technology can enable. She has been pushing us to innovate, but the mediocre talent we have can’t.

EH is smart so I’m hopeful that he will see the potential of tech.

Sadly some (I didn't say all) good leaders have been caught in the layoffs so the pool of candidates dwindles.

This steady stream of people from the outside overly incentivized to "make big changes and turn this ship around" with zero understanding of the business is beyond asinine.

Don't be mad at her. Be mad at the people that hired her.

Listen up, Nike leadership. Hiring from within brings people that care. Hiring from without brings every other sh-t problem with American corporate culture, into Nike.

If you want to lead, lead by choosing the right people. Don't follow the same leaders everyone else hired...it'll get you to the same mediocre spot.

Are you that surprised? Nike is a stepping stone for her. She doesn't care about Nike. She cares about pretending to be a leader.

Watch...by 2027, she'll be some C-level something-or-other working in some other department she's not qualified for.

She's got a good couple years left, su-king the soul from the local population before moving on to some other soulless position. Im pretty sure James Cameron wrote a movie about this.

We brought in a real engineering leader to lead engineering, emphasizing that engineering was the tech’s identity and priority.

However, we replaced the liked engineering leader with a non-engineering leader, and they will be shocked when engineering issues arise and talent revolts. Then, we’ll bring in an engineering leader again, and the cycle will repeat.

Stop the insanity…

MD doesn't make good tech choices (or the right choice for Nike). She makes the choices that benefit HER.

Not really sure how someone like that makes CTO aside from favoritism or some other BS. Why? Because she was some "leader" somewhere else??

She has no tech skills. It instills no confidence in the real tech people here. Her choices in direction, and in staff, continue to assure employees that she is not to be trusted or followed.
