What Employees Have Lost Over The Years

Emplyoyees have lost:

  1. Company paid medical benefits
  2. Profit Sharing
  3. The monthly possibility of promotions. Now done only annually
  4. Company contributions to 401K with each pay check. Now done only annually
  5. 2% or less raises
  6. Your own desk. Now having to come in each day to seek a desk with hoteling.
  7. No personal file space.
    Employees have gained:
  8. More work due to layoffs and resignations of colleagues, and job uncertainty

So how does management expect to keep and attract employees under these circumstances?

@n0 fear of change and self protection can hold people back, but you think the employees are holding the company back fr?? How about if you get promoted to a new position even if its in, say, April of this year, you dont get the salary increase until the FOLLOWING March 1st annual increase date?
Imagine getting hired anywhere else in the world and not being paid for the job you were hired for and then being told ‘you’re holding the company back’.

We also used to be able to interview and choose our new employees. Now managers are just assigned new people with cr-ppy skills and told to deal with it.

Don't forget the 35/37.5 hour work weeks and good cafeterias. And they cheated BNY employees when they eliminated the 2% annual bonus that was a year behind.

True...Im currently retired but have been with the company for 35 years! I sorely missed Profit Sharing the most!!! It was nice extra money putting down for a new home, pool, car, or whatever.

No matter how long you have worked for the company you start out with zero vacation days because you have to “earn” them. If you have earned, for example, a whole week and they let you go, you are not compensated for that week. They also eliminated purchased vacation.

We have lost many convenient locations to work in. Now we are forced to commute further away, spending much more money and time out of our lives to go to locations which are crowded. This makes RTO’s 4 and soon to be 5 days a week, just all the more painful.

This thread is gospel truth.

Also add staff who actually want to work. Now its nothing but people looking to do less but demanding higher pay than those with experience and tenure

Help desk that actually helped people and knew how

The bank actually acting like it cared about customers and staff. There were so many recognition programs all gone now

More losses:

  • True training and skills enhancements

  • Courses led by educated human beings not videos or brain shark canned noise

  • BNY’s own benefits and HR personnel with instant service. Now we have a watered down vendor company where tickets rule the day

  • inexpensive cafeteria with decent food

  • clean restrooms and facilities

  • mentally safe non threatening work environment

  • a career for life if you work hard and do the job. The career expectancy here is measured in months and years on one hand not decades.

  • senior expert employees to help and guide young talent

  • the ability to run a project with the best approach not silly trends and gimmicks like p.o.m

  • the ability to learn and grow from mistakes and not be fired by them

  • Common sense approaches and best practices to what works. Sorry but AI is not, will not and can never effectively work here. No one is brave enough to call it out to management

When they invest in systems that track keystrokes, mouse movements, and user behavior, it’s because they’re training models to replicate the workflows of the very people using those tools. Even if these systems reach only 80–90% accuracy, that’s enough for many employers to justify reducing headcount.

We’ve seen this pattern before. Many of us trained our offshore replacements under the promise of “support” or “efficiency,” only to be let go once the knowledge transfer was complete. AI is simply the next iteration of that cycle—faster, cheaper, and far more scalable. And managers who enthusiastically promote AI as an “assistant” don’t seem to realize that their own roles, which often involve coordination rather than deep expertise, are even easier to automate.

The same dynamic is unfolding in physical industries. Once AI systems can design, train, and operate robots with minimal human oversight, assembly‑line and logistics jobs will face the same pressure. This isn’t fearmongering; it’s a sober reading of the incentives and the trajectory of the technology.

If we don’t acknowledge this openly, we risk walking into the same trap again—training the systems that will eventually replace us, while telling ourselves it’s harmless. The conversation needs to shift from blind optimism to realistic planning, because the consequences of getting this wrong won’t be theoretical. They’ll be felt in unemployment lines and economic displacement.

9.) pension plan - this was a huge loss. So was the retiree cash supplement match that was stopped.

10.) retiree discount medical plan - while it technically still exists, BNY have made the prices of this option astronomical, to try and steer a retiree toward the horrific healthcare
Dot Gov ‘band aid’ plans

11.) free private banking and personal wealth advisement.

12.) highly discounted personal loans each year , if you needed it, up to $10K low interest

13.) flex time and comp days for nights weekends and going above and beyond

14.) extra days off for giving blood and volunteer services

15.) fun and festive company parties with good drinks and good catered food. Replaced by grim and tragic leadership shows with bad beer, cheap Boones farm wine, water, soda and trail mix snacks with M&M’s.

What have we gained?
