Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Neigbourhoods announced in NL

So let me get this straight…

We don’t have any assigned desks but…

  1. You can book a desk online
  2. If full, join another IDT neighbourhood
  3. You aren’t allowed to use other available areas in the building on a regular basis (LOL)
  4. In high demand days you will be told which days to work from site
  5. Attendance owners are tracking you

This is all absolutely ludicrous and ambiguous on purpose so they can say you weren’t “following the rules” and give you a lower rating at the end of the year.
And they get to determine what it means.

I’m very curious to see how many people worldwide will actually abide by this. I suspect it will not have the effect Wael is hoping it will. After all, you can only inflict this type of pain only if people let you.

After the backlash from trying to take away the purchased vacation, I hope there is a backlash here too. These rules aren’t for the betterment of the company as a whole, it’s Wael’s way to inflict attrition for people to leave on their own accord or to justify laying off.

These “rules” aren’t taking us to better long-term investments, it’s not taking us to better acquisitions.

The same disastrous decisions of burning cash through stock buybacks are being done by Wael all while telling us we can’t sit at the cafeteria if we want to.

“Only then use other available areas”
Only then when? Once? Every time? For a week? The wording is intentional.

It seems to me, Wael doesn’t need any workers at all, he seems to believe he can run the company all on his own. Maybe we should all listen and let him do it.

@ey True. But at least the company wasn’t a complete bloodbath in every department. We still had decent benefits, and they were not trying to make up rules to kick you out.

@k0 Just waiting to get the NL package, its good in NL. Why leave Shell if you can grab some money while you leave. Its a matter of time, just sit and wait until your role is ceased to exist or part of a shrinking job pool.

Funny to see some JG2/JG1 incrowd stuggling to find a job. They find out the hard way that their skills and network was only useful in Shell. By now Shell does not have that great name anymore on your resume.

Do we still have operations in NL? Why, what do they do anymore? Just stick around like a nasty case of the lice?

@f1 personally I think that is the main downfall of shell with respect of changing jobs every 2-4 years to get new skills. No one is ever in role long enough to truly gain enough experience or stay long enough to see anything they implemented. Thus, no one takes any ownership.

@ey

what has happened is that C suite changes jobs every 4 years and as soon as they come in they intend to “make their mark” by changing a bunch of stuff just to change it. pure ego.

if it works out, they’ll take credit. if it doesn’t, they’ll blame consultants they hired to do their plan

we have a society that fully empowers and enriches bad behavior at the very top of companies

Wheee! here we go!

working from site meaningful;
driving connection;
fostering our vibrant IDT NL community;
delivering competitive outcomes;
in-person connection and collaboration.

Oh boy, is anyone else tired of all this cheerleading rah-rah corporate-speak?
Ah, for the days when you had an office with a door, a personal sense of belonging to a dynamic culture and were valued, really valued, for your contribution to a successful, pioneering team and company.
Sorry, I’ve got to go now to make another chart for another meeting at my reserved desk.

@ep personally, I think BVB led the company to its current state. He sold off most of the decent downstream assets or shut them down and went all in on renewables. The downstream assets left are not great or have no scale, so really the only thing left is to become a solely upstream company. Shell needs to stop changing its strategy every 2-3 years and have conviction to stick to a plan.

@ej hear hear

You are so right my friend. The rest of us good ones are at this point getting bullied around. More work, more attrition and less pay.

Do not let them bully you, know your worth and what you bring. Nobody in LT or at the executive level are better than any worker.

It’s also not like She’ll has any future in energy let alone in other areas.

Wael better get used to Shell never being Exxon. That was a horrible strategy. If he loves Exxon so much why doesn’t he go work there?

Now we are just a wanna-be copy cat of a company and worth much less than what we were prior to him coming as CEO

#BringBackBen or at least some other CEO that will actually do some work.

Just Shell jg1's and JG2's wanting people around them to feel like a manager and feel less useless.

Good ones already left Shell, rest remaining get bullied now, but these will leave when package comes or get better job oppertunity.

Shell in a few year will be just snr. management, compliance folks and contractors.

so, what’s does shell retail even do besides cut so hard that we have to ration space for RTO?

it would be hilarious if i didn’t have to deal with it. do other companies have desk shortages from covid space and service cuts? embarrassing and stupid. theoretically very easy to fix but might cost know than 5$ and a pack of gum so it won’t be

that’s one more share of stock for wael at the price after oil hits 30$

@a5 you bore me.

I also signed up for a company that doesn’t have attrition as their main goal of the year.

It’s because of people like you that they keep on taking away more and more benefits. Keep on defending them now, you won’t for much longer when you’re next on the chopping block yawn

I would prefer to work in the office most of the time and when not visiting a client. Would like my own desk there with my stuff there. This really is not too much to ask. Not every site has as expensive real estate as London or Amsterdam. Just move the HQ to Houston already.

@OP You joined a company whose employment contracts are based on working in the office, yet you seem upset when this expectation is raised. What makes coming into the office especially tiresome is the constant complaining from people like yourself. If you dislike it so much, perhaps you should find a different company to join, especially given that you are in the Netherlands, where you have a beautiful working environment and commuting costs are covered, with allowances available if you choose to work from home. Gert over it - try and make it work

Announcement -

January 2026 is almost here. So, to follow up with the global expectation of 3 days Working from Site, it's good to take a moment to understand and review how this will be embedded in the Netherlands. If you've read our CCT emails, you'll know that we are establishing the Neighbourhood ("Buurtje") and Mayor ("Burgemeester") construct to make working from site meaningful: driving connection, fostering our vibrant IDT NL community and delivering competitive outcomes as a result of in-person connection and collaboration. As a reminder, you can read the Staff Council NFI here and the NL FAQs here.
The Neighbourhoods Structure
The Neighbourhoods are grouped into two main themes: Business Back and Technology Forward. We have 10 Neighbourhoods across the Netherlands:
• 8 at our Hague Campus
• 1 at Delftse Poort, Rotterdam
• 1 at the ETCA Campus, Amsterdam
You might be wondering: What Neighbourhood do I belong to? For example: If your base location is The Hague and you work primarily on Downstream activities or projects, then you'll work from the Downstream and Renewables Neighbourhood (DTR IDT Hague). We've mapped all staff to a Neighbourhood. And, next week, your Mayors) will contact you via email to welcome you to your proposed Neighbourhood. It may be the case that you feel that you're not assigned to the correct Neighbourhood on day 1 - and that is okay. Work will be made towards rectifying it, but it may take some time.
Our Neighbourhood Mayors
Each Neighbourhood will have a lead individual or team called "Mayor(s)". They are your on-the-ground individual who supports the themes of managing space, Neighbourhood logistics, and arranging social and learning events. To help understand their function, below are the items the Mayors can and cannot help with:
Mayors help with:
• A first point of contact for questions about Working from Site
• Coordinating and promoting on-site days, events, and Neighbourhood activities
• Gathering feedback on the workspace (facilities, ways of working) and feeding it back to the right teams
• Signal recurring issues to Facilities and local leadership teams

Mayors are not:
• Line Managers, HR, IT, or Facilities support desks: they'll be happy to point you to Facilities or the IT office to self-report issues:
• The Hague Campus: Facilities SharePoint portal, ETCA Amsterdam: Wando portal
• Delftse Poort Rotterdam: emailing realestateservicesnl@shell.com
• Attendance owners: They don't track or approve where you work from, but may check in if they haven't seen you in a while to see how you are doing
Getting ready for January
We understand that this transition will take some adjustments, and there will be some bumps along the way. We ask you to consider the following:
• Book your desk in advance via the Condeco (Eptura) app - you can book up to two weeks in advance. If a desk isn't occupied by 10:00, it may be used by someone else.
• The office has space, so if your Neighbourhood is full, please first join another IDT
Neighbourhood and only then use other available areas in the building.
• Be mindful of busy days; Tuesdays and Thursdays usually have the highest demand for space, so please take advantage of the other days as well. To spread occupancy, in specific Neighbourhoods, your Mayors may need to indicate certain days as your Working from Site days.
I know this is a lot of information at once, and you may have questions. For full details, please review the Netherlands Staff Council NFI and the Netherlands Working from Site FAQ.
And lastly, you'll notice that people will use Neighbourhood / "Buurtje" and Mayor /
"Burgemeester" interchangeably. It might be more complex, but it gives a Dutch flavour.
And, speaking of the Netherlands, I want to wish everyone who is celebrating a "gezellige" Sinterklaas.
