Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Here’s my issue with in-office

I can’t speak for everyone, but this is my take:

I don’t need to be in an office to do my job, but I don’t mind BEING in the office. However, I do mind GOING to the office. There is a distinction. At my location, I have to drive to get to the office. If I take public transit, it adds over an hour to the commute and there are too many nutcases around. But gas is expensive, and I don’t live where the bank has a nice, big free parking lot to park my car. For those of us in downtown metro areas, it’s costs hundreds a month just to park to sit in an office we don’t need to be at in the first place. When RTO happened, it essentially took thousands in take home pay out of my pocket.

Again, once I get to the office, it’s fine. I don’t mind seeing people and all that. (I will not do volunteer activities, however. I’m not cleansing any bank’s reputation with the public when I know they come up with bs excuses for why they can’t even pay their own employees full cost of living adjustments). I don’t know what management doesn’t understand about this. Gas prices are too expensive, parking is too expensive, the mediocre turkey sandwich at the lunch place down the street, that somehow costs $15 now, is too expensive, and if I bring my lunch from home I’m buying groceries that are also too expensive. Now, deep down in my heart, I know that management doesn’t care. But they will someday.

I totally agree. If I could just teleport, you'd never hear me complain again. BUT since I have to drive...2 dangerous freeways each way...just to sit in a cubicle in an enclosed room that is decades outdated (disgusting carpet, no windows, no ventilation) where I might see a person or two but no one I know OR work with, WHAT'S THE POINT??? Why aren't managers trusted to make decisions for each of their DRs on whether or not they need to be in an office? The Bank is not trusting its managers to manage, nor are they trusting their employees...which in both cases I ask, why are they still employed here? And they're not trusting their employees because the good 'ole DEI hiring is now coming back to bite them in the butt!

Nothing like sitting in traffic, paying to park, sitting in fluorescent lighting for 8 hours then encountering a man wearing a skirt, wig and makeup at the urinal in the bathroom. This is what I always pictured a successful career in finance would be, living the dream! I can't believe people don't want to RTO...

Agree completely. Truly easy for mgmt to tell us to be in office when they can afford to live 10 minutes away. It's heartless to needlessly keep us away from our families

@OP Over the past 10 years, inflation has risen by 30%. So if you haven’t received a 30% pay raise and you’re still employed, you’ve effectively taken a pay cut for doing at least what’s expected of you. Now, if you also spend 2–3 hours a day commuting—which is not uncommon for people working in big metro areas—you’re putting in an extra 40 hours a month and spending at least hundreds of dollars on commuting. If your entire job consists of working on servers remotely and meeting with people remotely, yet management still insists you come into the office, somehow believing you’ll be more productive there, then they have no brain and they have no heart.

@OP I think you summed up how an overwhelming majority of employees feel. The commute, and the cost/time/ aggravation/hassle/danger that goes along with it is the big negative. Not so much the (approx) 8 hours spent at the office.
