Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

US IDE Townhall

I just watched the recording and something I noticed was a rather despicable technique.

Kate said that the rumor that there will be another reorg in March isn’t true. And they can’t debunk all rumors. But the only rumor that I have ever heard is there will be massive layoffs next year after P&T is integrated into the businesses. This is a very logical thing to guess they will suddenly have extra people and they may or may not wind up needing or wanting them for their services.

She then proceeded to ask if we wanted another reorg due to all of the rumors about it, which was a “joke” in really poor taste.

Keep in mind that the LT all has media training. I believe that they intentionally debunked a rumor that makes no sense and probably doesn’t exist in order to not address the one that does. This is similar to how politicians these days will say crazy things and then walk back all but 20% of it, and then it turns out that all along their goal was to only get that 20% of bold things done.

Do not trust these people. Weasel words and sus physiognomy and body language. Jokes that serve as confessions.

Another example of this technique of answering a fake question to address a real one that can’t be handled - when asked about the future of US employees, Mark remarked that Shell is dedicated to investing in the region. This doesn’t even answer the question. Spending money the US doesn’t mean it was invested in the employees or that they won’t downsize again. Think critically and be very careful with what they say in town halls. It is literally rehearsed with PR.

Endless presentations about AI that never reach implementation, and internal “busy work” loops have created a system that produces little value for the businesses. Much of the work is subpar and requires significant rework if it is ever implemented. Costs in offshore hubs continue to rise while quality and delivery accountability decline. At this point, someone needs to take a hard, data-driven look at the numbers, the output, and the actual value being delivered. The bloat is real, and the inefficiency is now too large to ignore.

shell has swung between centralized IT and business owned IT multiple times in its history

IT evolution in the late 2000s was when this latest incarnation of centralization was formed. this created the indian hub by the way.

the reasons have to do with whether or not research or profit are the focal point of advanced it capability

theoretically -
Centralization = efficiency & control decentralization = innovation & domain specialization

it’s not as simple as cost. because capital is a tool that can be used for long term investments as opposed to short term stock buy backs. it’s all about attitude and beliefs of the LT at the time

many large companies do this slow dance for the same reasons. it will be very hard to rebuild advanced IT capability after it is purged or chased out, no matter which hub they are from.

IDE is a bunch of mostly India IT JG1's managers doing useless AI promises on ppt's to IT Lettercategories. Keeping themselves busy doing business with themselves.

And thousands of Indian junior software developers, so Wael finally found out it is bloated.

Stupid idea to have IT in house developed for an oil company. That stupid mistake was before Wael, so can't blame him.

Everyone in US Shell is subject to losing their job via a re-org (or multiple re-orgs) between now and the end of 2028. Any leader that says or implies otherwise is either in denial or just outright lying.

Oh please spare me the cryptic message. We are way past that. Either say what you mean explicitly or don’t say anything at all.

And while we are at it Let’s just pretend they do not know anything, in that case why do we have leaders then? For show?

If they don’t know anything then their roles become redundant and should therefore not exist. Because at the end of the day someone has to take responsibility.

What a joke of a comment

You would be surprised at how very little LT know.
