It’s being rolled out to France, Germany once again. The workers’ association is already in discussions to chart out the plan.

With PC refresh demand stagnant and GPU server sales struggling, the question is how management plans to maintain investor confidence. The likely playbook isn’t hard to predict: a mix of VSP and 75% of IBP; reduce operating expenses, boost operating income, and present a net profit uplift on paper.

I was offered either a PIP or self termination (with two months base salary + commissions for closed deals). I was already interviewing in the office and applying to jobs like crazy (never present at my desk). The day after I was presented with the PIP, I immediately took the week off to decompress (I had about a week and a half to accept the termination plan).

I was told I needed to bring in $250k in 5 weeks. I had about $125k of actionable pipeline that could reasonably close in that time span, but I knew my manager / senior had put a target on my back. Didn't help that a teammate snitched on me to my manager for applying to jobs.

On the bright side I was narrowing down on 3 offers (already had a verbal in hand), so I took the termination plan (never acknowledged the PIP) and mailed in my Dell equipment. I haven't looked back since, was able to enjoy a really nice 2.5 months of traveling and hobbies before I started my current job. I had a happy ending with no regrets.

If you're in sales, consider mentally checking out and going all in on interviewing. It was really worth it. I sincerely hope my manager and old team are enjoying their daily hour-long commute :)

Not sure how much a VSP would help at this point - with all the bullcr-p going on in the last 2+ years, those who wanted out have already arranged an exit whether with or without a "bonus" from Dell. The ones who remain have their reasons to stay (job market, age close to retirement, family reasons, etc.).

Dell might try VSP for above reasons, although I wouldn't bet on it. It's much easier to keep doing what they're already doing thinning the herd. It achieves their goal and the uncertainty puts added stress on remaining folks, facilitating even more churn.

@a3, Dell is paying 10s of thousands to leave already. Perhaps a voluntary option (likely based upon age and/or years with Dell) could be done for less money spent by Dell.

Because you volunteer does not mean Dell must include you in the offer. Its quite common to go this approach rather than how Dell has done their downsizing to date.

@jt It happened in the past, but yeah that's the reason I don't think it's gonna happen again.

@jv we've done it before and that is exactly what most of us did. Lined up another job, took the VSP and started the new job the following Monday after leaving. Most also came back to Dell after the 12 month waiting period at higher pay grades.

I mean, first off... why would dell pay people to leave if they don't have to. think about it, if i were to have been planning to quit bc i found a new job and started in say, 2 weeks, then volunteered myself to be laid off while collecting a package; then id have a NEW job/paycheck PLUS severance from Dell. Yeah... dell aint gonna do that lol

Secondly, the ONLY thing I could MAYBE see them doing is having very harsh stipulations for VSP. As in, been with the company for x amount of years, are older than x years old, and make less than xyz salary.

lol absolutely zero chance this will ever happen. Dell would never in a million years PAY people to leave lmfao! Most companies wouldn't.

@hmm. Interesting point: "You never have the right to sabotage the work of others".
Do they have a right, like d9 says, to put one on PiP just to save on a package?

@gm

Never disclosed to your manager you want to get laid-off unless there is an official HR offer. Always quiet quit till that happens or you get a better job.

So much to lose and little to gain showing your cards to those who are not there for your best interest.

@d9 Of course you have the right to do the absolute minimum. You never have the right to sabotage the work of others. That could be a criminal offense under many circumstances. Not to mention it hurts the people who are trying to make a living just like you.

@cw I did 3 months ago and got the package so you are wrong... I know of alot in emea that did likewise

that would allow the senior folks on my dev team to volunteer leaving the product essentially dead. All the knowledge would go out the door.

@ch well, I hope they do realize that PiP trick is smth that can be played by both parties. If one performs well and is put on a PiP just for the sake of kicking them out with no package, that very same employee would have the full right to do absolute minimum and and even sabotage work in a smart way.

Voluntary separation has been going on for a while.
Step forward and request it.

I have been seeing a lot of reoccurring "i asked for a package from my boss" posts.

Dont believe this nonsense. It's operating in the best interest of HR or a manager. Which neither are your friends.

Never show your cards.

Vsp will not be offered again. Too many people left and then came back 6 months later making more $$.
PIPS will be plan forward in Q4. Failure to meet pip guidelines will result in termination, meaning no package.
Q1 will settle down no layoffs but a continuation of pips.

Dell won’t offer VSP. Last time they did that there was a stampede to the exit and they were left counting their losses.

I asked my manager for a package. I knew it would mean no more promotions but she and I were new to one another and she had a team in another geo that she was closer to. I knew I was bottom of the totem pole so she might be open to it and when o suggested it I knew it was game over for me when it came to promotion.

Best thing I ever did.

@c4

They are paying to protect themselves legally and keep themselves out of the WARN act. trust me, if dell can get away with not paying the first 2months, they would.
And, yes, I agree. A VSP would break dell. A lot of people take the cheque and head for the door.

NEVER ask your boss for a package. There is no upside and a lot of potential downside. You never show your cards. Always quiet quit.

@bv That didn’t work for me. I was asking to be laid off for several years and I had to finally quit/retire. They were probably waiting me out but, I doubt that due to my salary. It would have been cheaper for me to be laid off rather than working.3 more years.

@a3 They are effectively paying people to leave peaceably right now. The only difference between what they are doing now and a VSP plan is that Dell gets to choose who goes.

@aj

People who have options, are marketable, money saved, and confidence in their abilities?

It's obvious which camp you are in. this is a case of "since I fail others will too."

Yea. I don’t think so. Dell is too cheap and has no empathy. Only good, smart companies do that. Like EMC.

I also doubt very much that Dell would offer voluntary separation packages. If they did, however, they could make it very restrictive to limit the number of potential participants. For example, maybe you would have to be over the age of 55 and have over 20 years of tenure to qualify.

If you want out, tell your manager. You might save the job of a team member who actually wants to stay with Dell. They are honoring some requests. I know of two who took the voluntary and got full package.

And where would this hypothetical stampede go for work? Tech hiring not exactly booming at the moment, but you're prob way smarter that I am and have that key part all figured out...nah, kidding. If this was a game show I'd suggest buying a clue or phoning a smarter friend..

not a chance.
there would be a stampede out the door.
