Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Anyone else feel like the hammer is about to come down?

It has been eerily quiet for far too long. There were some changes in the beginning of the year. Other tech companies have been making sweeping changes and layoffs all throughout the year. It has been quiet around here. I feel there will be restructuring or layoffs soon. Do you?

@1gf layoffs happen during growth all the time in the software industry. You are conflating things that are only sometimes related.

All WARN notices are public documents and are made available to the media upon request.

That's the real (and only) reason SAS doesn't want to lay off enough at a time to trigger a WARN notice. It would put the lie to "xx years of growth".

Wasn't there a much ballyhood visit of directors and VPs to the "region" earlier this year to celebrate the successful productivity, teamwork, and cooperation of said "region" with R&D back in Cary? Sooo, I guess, uh, nevermind.

@19z Those ba----ds! Not laying off enough people to be required to file WARN.

@wc I believe this is true. A trickle here, a trickle there. They won't have to file a WARN notice by doing it this way.

@148 sure they must? How else do you hang the pictures but with hammer and nails?

There will be no hammers falling in the Art Department, which is safe. None of them know how to use a hammer, regardless.

After the news from Amazon today, I have to say I am impressed SAS has not dropped the hammer yet. How long can it go on? I guess as long as the company doesnt lose money.

There have been no layoffs in the Art Department, which is safe.

@jt and they don’t want you to know how many have been laid off/jobs eliminated. They want everyone in the dark. It’s nothing new.

There have been layoffs in other departments as well: Tech Support, Education, Health/RFC. It’s easy to believe 600 or more were laid off.

After three VRBPs, I’d believe 800 in that category by now.

That leaves about 1000 to attrition. Is it attrition when you are told that your position is being eliminated? and that you must accept this lower salary or that severance package? We can distinguish between voluntary and involuntary attrition, I guess, but can only estimate a total.

So I guess ~2400 people are gone, via ~600 layoffs, ~800 buyouts, and ~1000 voluntary and involuntary attrition. Those are my ballpark estimates; enjoy your own.

@jt Agreed an incredibly small number of people over the timeframe you are including.

“a very very small number”

The layoffs in Child Care, On-Site Support, Testing, Professional Services, and Retail each affected at least 50 people. SAS publicly confirmed that the layoff in Global Sales affected 250.

In total, SAS has laid off at least 500 people that we know of, plus others that we don’t know of.

@j6 yeah I expect the severance is the reason also. But if someone is that miserable then go get another job and move on.

I mean they’ll end up hating their new job also but…. Value your mental health.

While I have no vantage point to any real numbers, I have expected layoffs all year. It will be interesting if the new CFO, the Big Guy, and G'Day will come to some sort of agreement on the matter

@ht If they simply resign then there’s no severance payout. That’s why. I agree that the mindset is troubling.

"There have been a very very small number of layoffs."

That number is not public. You don't know it, any more than the rest of us do.

“ Good god, I hope so. Get me the f outa here (with severance of course).”

I know this comment is predictable but it is still a relevant regardless.

If you feel that why the why not take matters into your own hands and get u the f outa here? Do you really need someone to do it for you?

Despite talk of constant layoffs on here that is just not the case. There have been a very very small number of layoffs. The rest has been through attrition and voluntary retirement. Will there be layoffs? Maybe. Maybe not.

If you aren’t in the potential voluntary retirement camp then you should take charge of your own destiny instead of expecting someone to handle it.

In all fairness anyone with that mindset should be a good layoff candidate. maybe you should just post your comment without being on an anonymous site.

@d0 If you read my comment carefully, you’ll find I did not say that the next few weeks had any particular relevance. Rather, I expect them to be typical weeks at SAS.

The company has been reducing headcount for the past ten years. So it would not surprise me to see a few more layoffs in the next few weeks.

I do believe that the CEO is kind enough to minimize layoffs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, when his employees are spending time with their families.

“ through the next few weeks”

Explain why you think the next few weeks has any more relevance than the countless other times that has been said in this forum.

The big guy is benevolent within the constraint of making a profit.

For the past ten years, inflation-adjusted revenues have declined >2% each year. In consequence, so has headcount.

Historically, the big guy has been reluctant to do layoffs at the holidays. If you make it safely through the next few weeks, probably nothing bad will happen until next year.

Other tech companies have been making sweeping changes ...

This is the kind of craziness that the company rides out through the business savvy and benevolence of the big guy. Maintain focus on your work and ignore the external distractions.

There are going to be lots that say yes.
But they are the same people who have been saying that for a couple years now.

It may happen. But not because people on here “feel” like it is going to happen.
