How many employees did Anthem lose so far this year, both to cuts and folks deciding they've had enough and walking away? I know there's no way to know the exact number (especially since we're still hiring, even though that makes no sense at all), but do we have at least a ballpark figure?

And more in October…
What is Krooger Specialty please?
They’re in the process on an acquisition with Kroger Specialty
For what it is worth
in 2023 from 1/1/2023 to 9/6/2023 29.9k US associates left the company
- 5k US associates have left the company between first of year and 9/6
again this is US only and employees not contractors/consultants
20,000+ gone.
In a small departmental meeting with a highly affected area (over half RIF’ed), they were told by their leadership that approximately 16k were riffed this last time. More to come throughout 2025 as more offshore are hired and more AI implemented.
Our goverment is the corporation. We lost the our goverment long ago. We are governed by corporations.
@jdw said “ How could we allow outsourcing replacing America? We have good politicians and they do not know?”
We not only allow it, but encourage it. The decreased expense leads to increased share price. The only thing that matters to those in the upper middle class and above. And that includes politicians. If you’ve got even a little put away for retirement, you’re part of the problem. I admit, I’m in there with you.
On the “ We have good politicians…” Quick, name 3. No? OK, name 2.

At least 11 that I know of.
In all seriousness, executive leadership knows exactly how many. Will that be communicated to the employees? No.
The number would be easily hidden and that's why it works. I'm not even sure a report exists in workday that could tell you.
- Rifs happen across the board to include one person to full teams.
- Jobs are "open" but are often targeted to someone already so they're not even really open. Pay attention to how many days they're posted for. A lot of times it's a title change not a real job.
- No accounting for onshore jobs that become offshore.
- No accounting for associates who suddenly work for a contractor and are no longer employees. We don't have 100k associates btw. I love how we don't mind people making that assumptions. 25% of that, if not more is already contractor. Not carelon global who are associates, actual contractors.
- Constant org shifts rebalance admin expense and fte count. The instability is determined by who needs to cut costs. And or just throwing darts at a board. As soon as I'm invited to a meeting I'll report back.
We might know how many people work for us but we definitely have no idea what the damage is to the onshore population. I would wager half of the existing onshore staff will be rifed and replaced by automation and offshore within the next 2 years. Late in 2025 we'll start to see further evidence of poor member and provider experience but we won't care until 2027 and then we'll have to hope we can be carved up and sold to some other shoddy payer. Best case scenario.
Keep your resume and LinkedIn up to date. Take no assurances from anyone. If the company needs to cut, they'll cut. It's just as likely to be impersonal then it is to not be. Your performance is an illusion. Know that if you get a 2 youll be an easy target the following year but theyll still rif people who perfomed better so i myself am confused on incentive.
Embrace it so the anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and stomach issues don't eat you alive. Remember someone at Wells Fargo, another soul less corporation, was ded in their cube for 4 days before someone noticed. The only reason that wouldn't happen here is because some locations have amazing facilities staff.
No one from the corp machine is looking for you unless it's to see that you stayed in the office more than 5 min after you swipe. There are very few genuine people past staff vp. The executive training plan clearly trains the humanity and personality right out of you. Or, our toxic culture corrupts even the best people. Probably equal odds. I've seen plenty of good people become company people just to keep power and their big check. They're trying not to be replaced just like regular staff but they have actual power to put you down so honestly, let them eat each other. It's a class war internally. Good thing there's more of us.
