Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Issue with vacation balance post RA

Hello - Any people who underwent IBM RA got underpaid on their final vacation balance
Although i emailed my supervisor before hand they reduced my vacation balance to zero after RA even though not a single vacation was taken and when i contact them they just give me generic response nor provide any proof. anyone went through this with them .. never though such a big company would make up stuff like this.

@19c Google this on Reddit etc. IBM used to allow people to roll over vacation before the G Man Gerstner regime and it became a huge laibility on the IBM balance sheet. People would leave with over 200 vacation day days. Now no roll over and as a prior post said IBM is so cheap that say you "get" 15 days, you only accrue that little by littel month by month. So for example with 15 days you would accrue .8 days a month. 15 days / 12 months. So if IBM votes you off the island in March you are looking at approx 2.5 days.

"Also IBM does not pay out from the previous year." Is this the case? I thought that previous years carry over: One just cannot get more then the current year?

Let's say:
2025: 20 days earned, 5 days taken
2026: One 1 January has 15 remaining, so one can only earn additional 5 days in 2026.
Let's say one get's layoff or resigns 2 January.

Under California law: All earned and unused vacation time must be paid out when you resign.

what happens actually at ibm?

@jf

That’s my only debt with IBM
It’s a rounding issue .

I don’t think they’d be that stupid to sue for $121 or the equivalent of Krabanaughs breakfast bill

@j8 "And they sent another letter wanting $121 for health insurance that they paid for December but my last day was 12/4" - I had the same exact situation. They make you pay for the full month, even if the final day is before the 2nd paycheck. Good news is that you can ignore this. I can't speak to other IBM debts, but I went through this specific situation myself and the person I called about it literally said that I could just do nothing and they will not pursue it at all (and it won't hurt your credit score).

In general, it definitely seems like IBM has a very tight process in place to claw back every possible dollar they can. A friend of mine who left was told he was overpaid in the thousands. He ended up negotiating with them and knocking it down to about 40% of what IBM asked for.

In the US, employees accrue days per month. So the number of days you were due is dependent on how many days you accrued. Also IBM does not pay out for Personal Choice Days or Carryover Days from the previous year.
