Thread regarding Texas Instruments Inc. layoffs

For the few who are still content, why?

I am just trying to understand what positivity anyone still has towards their job or this company after the constant hits to morale.

Call me crazy, I think the trajectory is still amazing. Organic growth plus acquisitions, aiming to get bigger and stronger. Of course in your daily life the balance of being confident in the future versus being concerned depends on a lot of factors, big picture only being one of them. The others are the people you work with, compensation, your boss, career opportunities etc. I made great money in the last 15 years here, had interesting opportunities, the company even helped me when I had to make changes in my life with offering a lower-profile position keeping some of the benefits I had before. So again, highly individual but in my case, I am not going anywhere.

I have a good manager and a good group of folks that I work with. Prior to working here for the last 20+ years I was laid off several times from several places. Some treated me better than others but none of those companies are around anymore except the Europe based one, they closed their American factories though. My raises have been pretty average through the years, even with a couple of zero raise years (sometimes nobody gets a raise). Are there better places to work out there? Probably. Are there worse places? Most definitely. I don’t live extravagantly so my paycheck is enough to pay bills, save for retirement, and still have fun. My current job is less interesting than some I have had in the past but has more flexibility. At my age I’m more interested in sticking around til I retire than pursuing the next big thing. It really stinks when RIFs are happening but that’s part of life. All companies do it, big and small. Live below your means, have some savings, and remember no matter what you do or how hard you think you work you are always replaceable. Look outside wherever you work to find your fulfillment and look at your job as the way to pay for it.

Don’t get it, at this point it’s:
More work = pay cut next year = no appreciation

Seeing how TI treats employees who devoted their whole life to this company and just lay them off says a lot. Like what’s the point to build a career here?

I think a lot of people are just waiting to line another job and profit sharing to hit their bank to quit.

@kt but why not go to a competitor and make more even more money with even less stress and higher job security?

I came from a military background.

Although the layoffs and reduction for future profit sharing have blunted morale, there's really no comparison to my previous work.

I'm making hand over fist what I was compared to my previous career, at a fraction of the stress.

At the end of the day, I am still making decent money to support my family that I love. That's really it.

@k2 not always the case. Worked a job that was initially shared by 3 others across the globe...within 7 years it was just me for the next 20 years.....run ragged servicing Europe, US, Japan and Asia...pay never got serious until I was finally successful in playing the SMTS and finally DMTs card despite no support from immediate management....yeah a career of over 3 decades ....but the reward after busting my butt and sacrificing so much of my family time and kids early lives only came to fruition after my own initiative to turn the tables on the politics of the Tech Ladder heiarchy to my advantage.

@j8 If it’s money you want, what is stopping you from getting a promotion? Work hard and innovate and you’ll make tons of money. Not really sure what the problem is, unless you don’t want to work hard?…

@h9 that 19% is worth 12% next year and we're not likely to have higher PFO moving forward.

TI has destroyed my dreams, so I'm still here only because I haven't found something else.

I have a stable high paying job that keeps my family financially secure. I work in electronics which, to me, feels like playing with the toys I used to get as a kid. I enjoy helping people solve problems and I’m blessed to be in that role.

I used to work for another company where treatment was far worse, pay was less, stress was higher, and during the Great Recession there was nothing you could do about it.

Maybe as you get older and gain experience you’ll realize that even 19% profit sharing is incredible that most walking the earth would give anything to have.

Looks like the only people who don't hate it here are the people who are overpaid because of their tech ladder position

High level tech ladder (SMTS and above) get paid very well, that helps everything

When I left my previous company more than a decade ago, my manager (a humble gentleman) told me "go and see that it su-ks everywhere". Indeed it does.
Just go to TI's competitors on this very website and read it yourself.
I am not happy with TI either but I value different things than before. Short commuting distance, very good network of contacts, TL rank, stable income. I also accept the fact that at my age, nobody is queuing to get me on board.

Contentment should not be found in a job or company bc they’ll let you down eventually. It’s a biz transaction. The sooner u think of ur career/employment that way, the better. Find more outside of work to keep positive about will help.
