None of it makes sense. I lost several exceptional people from my team. It feels like the decisions were made strictly by the numbers, and because of that we’ve let go of some truly valuable talent. How is that supposed to work long-term?

@dk I don't feel like that's necessarily the case for all those let go. Some people did a LOT of work and basically carried their team on their back- while some people that are still here (in non-mgmt, lower level positions) are actually menaces to everyone around them.... and they ain't even that great at what they do. I think it it must be a combo of both
@OP so you’re new here, huh?
@j4 nope, not at all. But my department wasn’t affected (much) this time - might be why. We had one problemo that I assume was an hr call.
@hz LOL then your higher ups are making those calls without your input, which can't be comforting.
@fc nope.
@fb how so? As a manager, you were never asked about reducing your headcount?
@dk as a current manager this is false
@et Of course the ones let go were on a list complied by the groups manager. If the manager was let go, it might have been his/her list and their director's list combined. Bottom line, if you were let go, you were on someone's list.
All your jobs are going to India. You can thank the current CTO who spearheaded the FTE to India migration. Mattel has regressed to pre-Covid conditions.
@dk so what if out of an entire team of 6, only 2 were kept (during massive layoffs) were the 4 that were let go honestly part of a list the manager made?
@dk interesting, so when your manager tells his team he’s “just as shocked as you guys are” in the obligatory post-layoff grieving meeting, he’s just acting?
From a former manager, layoffs at Mattel are never about eliminating positions. They're about eliminating your problem employees. A manager is told to provide a list, and it's his/her opportunity to get rid of people that would be problematic to fire. Of course there might be exceptions, but if your manager doesn't like you, you get put on the list provided to HR. Simple as that. The workload doubles or triples on the surviving staff.
@OP where were you in March? Or the year before, or the year before that?
The axe is coming for everyone eventually.
Mattel has done layoffs about once a year for a long time. It’s sad to see it’s part of the culture. Very toxic workplace.
Layoffs are always by the numbers. Time comes when your number is up. Mattel reductions have never been handled well. That is an institutional behavior now decades old. Failing to the top is another . Look at any of the leaders of the business units! JS literally ki-led American Girl. Promote them all for ruining a brand.
Have you been here long? Twice a year…problem? Layoff/reorg then put it on the teams to “figure it out”.
It's not supposed to work long term, it's supposed to work short term. Every cut removes bottom line labor YOY that looks great NOW. Those roles Will be needed again
