Thread regarding Synopsys Inc. layoffs

Ansys India layoff yesterday

I never thought I would be writing something like this.

I’m 45 years old, and I’ve spent the last 18 years at Ansys, working remotely and affiliated to the Pune office in India. Like many others, I joined when the company was known for its stability, long-term vision, and the way it treated its employees. For nearly two decades, it felt like a place where you could build a career with trust and security.

Yesterday, that changed.

In a short meeting with HR, I was informed that I’ve been laid off. Our team, based out of India, USA and Spain is being cut by nearly 80%. Just like that.

I have a housing loan (EMI), daily expenses to manage, and a 2-year-old daughter depending on me. My wife is working, and she can support us for now, but I don’t want to put the entire burden on her shoulders. Living on a single income, especially in today’s world, isn’t sustainable for long.

What makes this harder is not just the job loss itself, but the feeling that something fundamentally changed. For years, Ansys was seen as a stable and dependable company. Many of us built our lives around that belief. The recent acquisition has shaken that trust. It feels like decades of stability and goodwill have been undone in a very short time.

It’s difficult not to feel that employees have become secondary to financial goals. Decisions like these make it seem like people are just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Right now, I’m trying to process everything and figure out the next steps for my family. I just had to vent since I never really expected I’d see this happen. I was naive. Anyway, good luck to you folks around the world, I hope things go well.

@OP Most of the people laid off here were older than 55. There were people just a few years away from retirement, people with young children, and people burdened with large loans—all of them with lives to live. Even if they’re forced to quit after being offered a small severance package, they won’t be able to find a decent job going forward.
Some of them are even taking legal action. I don’t know if this will be any comfort to you, but the situation here is even worse than what you’re facing. And you are much younger than us so you can find better jobs.

Let’s all sue the company!

@hz No, not at all. Depends on which company, and how it is run. In a private company, not a public one for example, things can be managed very differently.

Just so that you don't repeat this mistake again, because it seems you have some idealistic vision about the world (despite living in the hellhole that is India) - EMPLOYEE IS ALWAYS SECONDARY TO FINANCIAL GOALS. Never forget that.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and support, it really means a lot during this time. I’m not very active on this forum, but I just needed a place to share and vent a bit.
@cz To answer the question, I was part of the DBU, and more recently I was working on an R&D effort rather than an established product.

Wishing all of you the very best as well. Given everything that’s going on, I truly hope things turn out better for everyone here.

Sorry to hear and all the best on your next phase. It is very transparent that employees have become secondary to financial goals (or rather, secondary to mitigating top leadership's bad decisions). Many would agree that "company was known for its stability, long-term vision, and the way it treated its employees" describes Synopsys when Aart was the CEO.

I am very sorry to hear this. Praying that you and your family pull through this quickly and on to better times. If you don't mind sharing, which team or physics was your team supporting? Take care

This is a tough day for you and stressful. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I have a strong feeling my group will be gone soon as well (Ansys, based in the US). Take a little time to process and come to terms with such a big, life changing event and then you can move on to whatever might be next. Its a hard thing, and isn't fair, but not the end of the world. You're going to be ok.

Sorry to hear, Ansys alone was an amazing company and amazing place to work. Synopsys, better yet, Sassine has been a plague on us all. I really hate that Sassine alone has ruined such an amazing company.

Ansys was really doing fine as a standalone organization.

Best of luck on your job search.
