Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

How do you fare with a job search?

I’m becoming really worried. I started scouting for other options months ago, just to give myself some peace of mind ahead of the reorg. But it’s made me more anxious instead. It really isn’t good out there.

@qb, Absolutely because they vouch for your character and work ethic. But be careful how you present that on this site because I'm sure you'll be accused of being part of:
nepotism, good ol boys or gals only, friends only network, don't hire anyone but their friends and relatives, only hire people from X university, Prejudiced against this or that, etc. etc. etc.

You are much more likely to get your next job through a former co-worker, friend or a recruiter. Mailing off over 100 resumes blind got me one interview.

@hq Thats a good plan. Dont let this deal discourage you, you still have a lot of value to add with whatever you do. Dont let this company or job title define you. As a person..as a worker you’re still valuable and this might be the opportunity you needed to start that business or anything

I’m going to take some timer off and Uber here and there. I saved up a lot and my spouse does very well. I’m also contemplating starting my own business. I hated this platform model, my product owners, it jaded me from corporate America. I don’t know if I can stomach that again.

OP, job market is definitely very competitive at the moment.

The good news is that Chevron experience is in high demand, if you got to work for a top tier company like Chevron you will have other opportunities at other great companies.

I would ping recruiters in your field of expertise to get the ball rolling now. Even if it's a temporary 6-12 month gig to tie you over until the market absorbs all of the redundancies.

Get AI to research what big capital projects are starting up in your area so you can jump in early at companies that are actively expanding.

It's pretty daunting for all of us but there are also some very good opportunities out there. I'm confident that Chevron people will find their feet pretty fast and continue to build and deliver value foe the companies lucky enough to pick them up!

@dk i m sorry to hear you think that was a wise decision. If you have some self control and discipline, that extra payment from the past few years would be much more than the balance you paid. Also, if you are laid off, those funda not only would have grown, but also available to you. Your home equity will be much more costly to tap into.

I am not actively searching either, but I have gotten a few calls from former associates. Make sure you reach out if need be and if you are in a position where you are fairly confident that you will be available soon. Good luck!

Not actively applying until week of June 15th. My LinkedIn is up to date and getting traction from recruiters though.

All the more reason why I’m glad I listened to some really good advice and paid off my mortgage a couple of years ago early. Even though I had a really low interest rate, I just wanted to have peace of mind that the roof over my head was taken care of. With the severance, and some good budgeting, I could probably be OK for about a year or so, perhaps more.

Mortgage was my biggest monthly expense.

I’m so glad I don’t have kids.

OP, from what I'm seeing, plan on the job search to take longer than expected. I know you're likely trying line something up for your particular wave, but getting your resume out there early isn't a bad thing, even if you do stay at CVX. Remember to utilize all tools like Copilot to help you draft the best versions of your resume, tailored to the job you're applying. Also, try not to worry. Worrying never does anyone good and it definitely won't change the outcome. Best of luck to you!

Wanted to share some hope/encouragement for those looking to find another job. The job market is certainly not wonderful right now, but after 2-3 months of applying and interviewing I actually found a role I’m excited about that won’t cut my pay. So despite what the headlines and rumor mills are saying IT CAN BE DONE. This situation su-ks and I’ll be hoping that everyone ends up where they would like to be. Try not to get too discouraged by all of the headlines telling everyone it’s impossible. You got this!

@ah
Wrong. They only specifically told us the details in March this year. And that was on purpose so people don't jump all at once......

What indications were given 24 months ago?

@ah 12 months is a bit of a stretch. Quite a slim chance a company would be willing to withhold a job offer for that long.

Not to be a di-k, but Chevron provided guidance regarding these layoffs 12-24 months ago (depending on your willingness to read between the lines).

If you're just getting around to your job search now, you're way behind the ball. An interviewer will take kindly to a person who plans 12+ months out. They will not take kindly to a person who stuck their head in the sand, then panicked at the last minute.

It was cr-p in the beginning that was beginning of April. I revamped my resume mid April and submitted more applications (about 50) I started to get a lot more denials, albeit because I spammed. Right before the job selection tool opened up, I got about 5 interviews lined up. Now I’m thinking of taking a second job, since Chevron wants to fu-k around with transparency.
