Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Is it time to Unionize?

1% of your salary to union dues, would buy you a ton of protection from the (allegedly) fraudulent leadership we have.

Do you want to just keep rolling the dice on endless layoffs? Or have a much bigger 3rd party with all the legal resources provide a degree of protection.

Think your salary is below where it should be. Union rep to review your case.

Think you’re being wrongfully terminated because of your age. Union to hold Nike accountable to age discrimination.

Think you’re stuck at a certain level even though you’ve put years in… Union.

Think leadership compensation has gotten out of hand. Union to pressure under the threat of a labor strike… to balance compensation back to the workers.

Real question. How many would be in? Think we could get 50.01% of corporate workforce?

Is that a joke? 80% of tech works about 4 or 5 hours a day about 4 days a week. Half of that time is in meetings or standing around talking. Unions are for protecting low performers.

The brand has already left the chat. We’re a commodities company. And not a well run one at that. In an Olympic cycle our biggest story was Costco shoes.

The company has lost a relative half a trillion in value in the last five years. Wake up.

The brand is gone. And 3-5000 more in layoffs are going to have to happen to balance it.

Worst idea ever. Would guarantee the demise of the brand. Talk about championing mediocrity. Try working at a Union shop. Nike employees are the most entitled weak people on the planet.

Nope. Did two unions before and never ever again. You won’t get my vote.

workers should organize to fight the pfiles controlling capital. the problem is that unions in the US are garbage. capital has spent the last 120+ years making sure they are neutered. we need to find worker solidarity through other means.

Definitely lots of merit based career advancement at Nike. And those 2-3% annual wage increases (except for the 8-10% for leadership) is great. No need for a union when the speak up portal does a great job of protecting you.

Unionization would ensure I immediately leave Nike.

I worked in a unionized workplace at a previous employer. Worst work environment ever. Lowest wage increases and zero merit based career advancement. Actively encouraged antipathy towards the employer.

The union was simply a second corporation that provided labor to the first corporation. They displayed little to no regard for members.

I'm open to it. I'd get involved in helping organizing one, even, if someone I trusted approached me with the idea

Will never work at Nike, would never get the vote. They do a good job of rotating out employees quick enough that the need isn’t perceived by the younger lot.

Try 100:1

If you haven’t looked up exec compensation, you should.

HR VP MM will make more this year after she was let go than I will in 30 years at Nike. She’s still getting paid an absurd amount, and doesn’t work here.

But yeah, go on about how Unions are evil.

Open to unionizing. but only if it’s structured and focused on specific outcomes, not just frustration.

Some conditions that would make it credible:

  • Real friction around layoffs. Transparency on business justification, structured review, and defined severance minimums. Not immunity .just accountability.

  • Voluntary buyouts first. Offer exits before involuntary cuts.

  • Dues capped at 1% of base salary. Hard cap, no surprise assessments.

  • Lean governance. Audited financials, bi-annual elections, limited leadership seats, term limits, member vote required for strikes.

  • Representation for leveling, comp, and discrimination cases.

A union won’t eliminate layoffs or automatically fix pay bands. The value would be leverage, transparency, and due process.
If there’s serious interest, it should be around a clear framework like this - not just the idea of “union” in theory.

@op…start your own company smarty pants. You’re too smart. Fear of a layoff will no longer impact you. You’ve got this.

If the speak up portal had an option to request no-retaliation when making a report… maybe people wouldn’t be talking about the need for a union.

Unions are gross and equally self serving. Trading one master for another. The difference is, you pay one directly. You know nothing.

Hey chat, does it feel like a country club to you?

I presume you are under 40, and aren’t at risk of being let go because of your age.

Or maybe, you agree with the imbalance of power that exists between the managing layer. Or maybe, you are one.

Or, you enjoy working for SR Dir or VP’s that are out earning you 3:1… up to 5:1.

Perhaps you’re ok with senior leaders (allegedly) abusing the power they have in a publicly traded company for their own personal gain.

It’s all a facade. Built to placate you into thinking it’s ok. But when you have to tell your spouse it’s a coin toss on whether or not you need to move from Beaverton to find a different job… because you didn’t learn politics. Or didn’t hide your gray hair. The shine of the facade will fade.

If you wait that long, while believing it’s a country club… it will be too late.
