Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Security for Show, Ethics for Later

What is going on with these people in EMTech? I invited a friend who works at a CO₂‑capture startup to do a talk, and suddenly they’re asking me to “see if we can use his models.” We get constant phishing‑awareness emails drilled into us, yet now they want me to violate someone else’s IP. That’s not curiosity ,that’s asking me to steal technology. Amazing. We can’t click a fake UPS link, but apparently stealing someone else’s technology is fine.

@jh I always mark all emails as suspicious emails. I’ve seen people lose access to external websites for weeks because they didn’t catch a phishing email and needed manager approval email for everything

It’s fun to get an email from your boss that leads you to believe it has something to do with your pds but is a mock attack. What the heck . The only reason I did the suspicious bottom is I know he doesn’t care enough to worry about my pds.

EMTECH people mostly learnt to repeat each other 's blah blah . Just listen to them they say the same thing in different accents.

@hd trade secrets by definition are not disclosed publicly. If you have a model and you display it publicly without having IP protections in place, you have given it away.

And you are right that they are not likely to give it away. But I don't see why OP thinks it's so terrible to see if we can use the models. I could see the disdain if the ask was "see if we can use them for free". If I'm a startup and XOM says can I use your models, I get big dollar signs in my eyes thinking of the licensing agreement.

@hc not sure about details of this case but Public disclosure doesn’t magically erase IP rights. Trade secrets, licensing terms, and contractual restrictions still apply.
Startups especially don’t just hand over their core models because someone asked nicely. You but their technology that's all

@OP What is wrong with seeing if we can use his models? You ask, "hey can we use your models?" And he says yes, no, or yes if you pay me.

Also, if it's been publicly disclosed, but not patented there is no infringement and there is no stealing.

@OP How does watching out for phishing attacks have anything to do with infringing on someone else's IP rights?

Like, I get stealing people's ideas is wrong, but this is a really odd comparison.

In my first project, this guy with a mountain of “experience” lectured me about innovation and new ideas. Then he bragged about an idea he supposedly came up with to save money. I’d literally just read the same idea in a university lab paper. When I pointed that out, he told me I read too many papers and should think more “industrially.” Thank God he didn’t try to patent "his idea"!!

I had a teammate working on one of those nonsense projects, and he told me the IPTL and a few project members saw a paper written by a prof from their old school. Instead of reaching out professionally or proposing a collaboration, they told him to “ask for his files.” This professor’s entire career and longevity were built on that work. how dare they treat it like something they can casually extract through a back channel. The entitlement is unbelievable.

The foundation of career development in EM is built on stealing the ideas and accomplishments of others.

To steal the ideas and implement one needs to have some technical abilities and brains left.

EMTEC at XOM is not a place where anyone knowledgeable or sensible is left. The d-mbos won't be able to steal technologies even if it is handed them on a platter. All one can do is to --- between supervisor-manager and -worker --- look mutually good with fake promises.

Integrity? At EM? People don’t even manage the bare minimum office ethics. It’s jungle rules in there.

EMTEC/XOM Is Not a Technology Company. No Matter How They Advertise Themselves. If you’re looking for innovation, EMTech/XOM is not the place

Are you new to emtech? The entire culture there promotes stealing ideas from vendors and competitors...but doing it worse and slower.
