From what I remember, everyone has a corporate title (like AVP) and an internal working title (like Analyst III). I used to have to pull employee lists. It generally went something like this:

0 = CEO
1 = Chiefs & Direct Reports to CEO
2 = SVP Executive II (head of LOB, equivalent to senior executive)
3 = SVP Executive I (equivalent to junior executive)
4 = SVP or VP, Manager II (equivalent to senior manager)
5 = VP or AVP, Manager I (equivalent to junior manager)
6 = AVP (officer but non-manager) or Executive Assistant
7 = Admin Assistants, Coordinators, etc
8 = Call center and entry-level employees
9 = Very basic data entry and minimum wage earners

Very often, messaging and invitations to big events go to Bands 0-4. It was generally known that Bands 0-3 were the executives, 4-5 were the managers, 6-7 were support staff, and 8-9 were more junior employees. I want to say tellers were maybe band 8 but can’t recall for sure. There are very, very few band 9 employees - it did exist at one point; I’m not sure it still does. I left years ago. Also I didn’t work on the investment banking side. I think they use MD titles that I wasn’t familiar with.

I’m hearing job bands are going away. Not sure what the replacement will be or if/how it will impact pay. Anyone else hearing this?

@1rcz pretty much covered it all. I'd just like to add a small correction: there are 8 Bands altogether, not nine or more. Unless there is a band below tellers I don't know about.

which dept? usually means higher level "officer title" (your official company title, not your role)
Please know Bands overlap on salary and have WIDE ranges.
I am a manager and direct reports have asked me to increase their band, thinking it will mean more $$$. It does not.
For most managers, easy to hand out titles.
HR has us hold $$$ to give separately.
The only way to get both simultaneously is a really significant promotion.
And $$$ are harder to come by in today's expense-centric environment.

I may be off on the below as I've stopped watching it, so others who may have greater knowledge, please chime in.

Mostly they seem to go like:
0 = CEO and his Direct Reports
1 = Two-deep from CEO
2 = Three-deep from CEO (e.g. head of line of business or major scope (# people, geographic reach)
3 = SVP or MD (usually a senior manager; manager of multiple teams and/or other managers)
4 = VP, Director or Principal (middle-level manager, may or may not manage people)
5 - 6 = Officer level (e.g. Analyst)
6 - 9 = Non-officer (e.g. Executive Asst, Admin Asst, etc.)
I think 9 may be it, but could be more levels. Perhaps others know better.

Depends on the group...

BAML progression is:

  • Analyst ->
  • Associate ->
  • Vice President ->
  • Director ->
  • Managing Director
